! out of 18 updates wont install

Windows Installer 3.1 fails to install, but all the rest installed fine.
This is following a repair installation of XPSP2.
Other problems that may or may not have a connection to this: Although my
internet connection is fine and "always on" (hi-speed cable) Windows Help &
Support can't find a connection for the "Did you know" section.

Thanks for the help. I tried saving the .exe to my desktop. It wouldn't
install. Tried in safe mode too...no go. I think it's format and
reinstall time....third time in 3 days. I've never had problems like this
before.

I am having a similar problem. Everytime I start my laptop I am told I have
an update ready to install. It is always Windows Installer 3.1. I install
and even though it appears succesful it apparently never installs correctly.
When I check updates I see that each attempt has "failed".

I finally got it to take, but only after I did a format/reinstallation of
XP. I don't recommend that unless it's needed for other reasons, in my case
it was. If I see an answer elsewhere I'll post. Otherwise you might want
to use the link that appears when you look at the failed notice to ask MSFT.
They provide free support for all Update issues.
