Not sure, but since I'm assuming it has something to do with Windows Update,
it may be a message related to corruption of the datastore that WU uses.
Follow the steps in this article to clean up that folder and see if the
issue resolves.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

Note that if that doesn't fix your problem, please post back with more
details.

pc won,t run new task. It starts to then stops. same as system restore
starts ans then stops and also in safe mode.Appears many file folders are
empty. Also try to do a restall but windows cd would run start the upgrade but
then stop. I am worried about losing data that I hadn`t yet backed up and all
the settings, email ect. It`s all to do with KB834707 and KB885884 auto up
dates for xp from microsoft.
Any solutions would be help ful. Thanks

Sounds like you have a much more serious issue than just getting Windows
Update to work. I'd suggest you use whatever backup methods are available
to you immediately (!) to save whatever you can.

At this point I'd recommend you not try too many other things that could
further jeopardize your data files. Depending on what data you cannot
afford to lose, you may want to take the computer to a professional/repair
shop and pay them to help. Guessing that the more attempts you make to get
the system working right now the more personal data you are going to lose.

I doubt that either of those is the cause. I suspect something more serious
(hardware malfunction, disastrous viral/worm/malware infection(s), bad RAM,
etc.).

If you feel up to doing all the hardware and similar testing yourself,
suggest you post the full details of your problem in the MS public XP
newsgroups as those folks will likely have a wider range of troubleshooting
tips. IMO this is well beyond a Windows Update issue.
