Outgoing Email Error

Hello, I'm trying to set up an account via an aol broadband (wireless)
connection through the Windows Mail facility. I have been through loads of
previous questions and tried different things but, whilst I'm now able to
receive emails, I am still unable to send them for a new business domain
name. I have tried setting up my aol emails through here and this works fine
- both incoming and outgoing, but no joy for the outgoing business account.

Error message is:
"The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Test1', Account:
'mail.webcreationuk.com'. Server: 'mail.webcreationuk.com', Protocol: SMTP,
Port 587, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E".

I've already:
* checked the box 'include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing'
* changed the server to IMAP
* checked the box 'My server requires authentication'
* changed the port for outgoing mail (SMTP) to 587; and
* unchecked the box 'store special folders on IMAP server'.

Still no joy. Anyone able to help please?

You say you have AOL broadband, but you're not using AOL's mail servers.
I rather doubt that mail.webcreationuk.com supports either IMAP or an
SMTP port other than 25. Where are you getting these inappropriate IMAP
and port 587 settings from?

I would have advised you to use AOL for sending except for one problem,
AOL does not permit a non-AOL email address to be used.

Basically, you have only two workarounds.
1. Use webmail for sending. Or,
2. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and use it for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is.

Hi Gary,

I was advised to use POP3 by the people setting up the domain but this
didn't do anything - looking at other threads it seemed that AOL worked with
IMAP and needed the 587 - perhaps I misunderstood.

Any idea how it is that incoming mail to the business domain is working but
not the outgoing?

If all else fails, will have to go for the gmail account - thanks for the
advice.

Incoming and outgoing mail use separate connections to the server, if not
separate servers entirely. It looks like the incoming connection is working
but not the outgoing connection.

Outgoing mail needs strict controls in order to reign in the spammers.
One of those controls is a requirement to only use the outgoing mail
server belonging to your ISP. This restriction is explained here:
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/P..._Blocking.aspx
The only exception to this requirement is an SMTP server that uses
a port other than '25'.

Mail server settings are specified by the owner of the mail server you
are using, *not* your ISP. So AOL mail server settings have no bearing
on you since you are not using the AOL mail servers.
Also, it is not a good idea to try settings recommended for a different
mail server than the one you are actually using.

Go online with AOL. Go to HELP, Go to FAQ. Search for POP, POP3, SMTP. Follow settings instructions. I have AIM/AOL. Here are my settings for my AIM account (AIM = AOL): incoming mail: pop.aim.com; outgoing mail: smtp.aim.com; outgoing SMTP port: 25; incoming mail POP3 port: 110. Do not check any of the authorization boxes. User name, password and email address as appropriate. It works just fine for me. Any problems, just IM me: screen name OldeGreywoolf.

You're not giving us much to go on.
Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

I see you posted with an AOL email address. Assuming that is
the account you want to set up in Windows Mail, follow AOL's
instructions:
http://postmaster.aol.com/imap/express.html

Those instructions were written for Outlook Express, but
Windows Mail uses the same settings as Outlook Express.
