My computer is running Vista OS; Office Professional 07; Outlook has been my
mail program of choice. For the 2nd time my inbox indicates, but does not
display messages in the inbox; after the first occurrence by following the
online directions at Microsoft using scanpst Outlook worked for 3 days, the
computer then started slowing down, I ran virus, malware, spyware scans;
whenever I turned the computer on the hard drive [160 gig] showed less free
space, I ended with less than 1 gig, removing files, defrag and additional
scans didn’t solve the problem. I spent 4 hours on the phone with Dell tech
support and the tech person proclaimed a hardware failure and had a new hard
drive sent out.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening , is this something in Outlook
that I can fix then prevent it happening again or something I am doing and
need to correct? My updates are current with no filters turned on.
Thank you

If it was indeed a bad HDD, then Outlook didn't cause it.
If it was something else, after installing everything on the new HDD,
whatever malware you may have had should not be there.
Make sure to have a good AntiVirus program.
I like to use SpyBot Search & Destroy as a supplement to Defender for
spyware.

I think it's likely that you have imported all your old mail. You may be
having problems with a "Personal Information Store" file, usually named
'Outlook.PST'. I would create a new one by 'archiving' the old one. If the
new one works well, you can selectively copy data from the old archive as
needed. See outlook help on archiving.
