Hi there,
I think these are pretty easy questions but I am not that computer literate.
I just bought a new computer with the MS Vista already loaded in it. My old
computer completely seized up and I lost all of my contacts in Outlook. I do
have another computer at work with the contacts but don't know how to get
them from that computer to my new one and loaded in correctly. Have any
ideas?? I tried to email them to myself but that didn't work. Also, if I
don't buy the MS Office program after the free trial will I still be able to
open Word documents with the MS Works program. Thanks any help!!!

1. At the computer at work, open Outlook. File>Export and export to a
..pst file. I believe you can choose which bits you want to export, like
Contacts. Save the .pst file somewhere you will find it, like in your My
Documents. Now copy that .pst file to some external media large enough
to hold it such as burning to CD/DVD-R or a usb thumbdrive.

2. Copy the .pst file you saved to your new computer like in your
Documents folder. Open Outlook on the new computer and import your Contacts.

3. If you don't buy MS Office after the trial expires you will probably
not be able to open Office-formatted documents in Works. You can
download free Word, Excel, and PowerPoint viewers from Microsoft which
will allow you to view the files but not edit them. A better alternative
which will let you open and edit MS Office files is to download and
install OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org. OpenOffice is an excellent
free office suite which can read and save as MS Office formats.

For further questions about Office and Works usage, post in one of their
newsgroups because that's where the Office and Word experts are.

In dealing with Outlook, one should never export or import .PST files; doing
so usually causes Outlook profile corruption. With Outlook closed on your
work PC, make a copy of your .PST file and place it in a folder on your new
Vista machine. Be sure to NOT OVERWRITE any existing .PST files. Open
Outlook on the Vista machine, go to 'File|Open|Outlook Data File', and
navigate to the copied .PST file. When you've connected Outlook to it, open
it and drag and drop your contacts from the old .PST to the new one.
