Outlook error message: MS Exchange is unavailable

I started getting the following message this evening when I tried to open MS
Outlook 2007.

The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online
or connected to complete this action.

All I can do is click on Ok.

After I do this, I get the Microsoft Exchange dialog box where I can put in
the Exchange Server address and the Mailbox name (user name). When I click
on Check Name, I get:

The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchang is
unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.

When I click on Ok, it takes me back to the Microsoft Exchange dialog
window.

I have checked others Outlook, and theirs are working. I can get logged
into OWA as well; just not through Outlook on my desktop.

I have looked online, and have tried copying the default profile to another
profile and then deleting the original one. That didn't work. I have
uninstalled Outlook and reinstalled it, and that didn't work. I don't know
what else to do.

In the bottom corner of your Outlook does it say that Outlook is
offline? Can you ping the server?

I've seen Outlook 2007 get horked like this, and the only solution I've been
able to make work is to log in with another user account and delete the
entire user profile of the user having issues. I'm sure there's a cleaner
way to do it, but I just haven't had time to dig deeper, and this worked.

Yes, I can ping the server, and Outlook won't even open after the second
error message. I should say that it starts to open, and I can see it
opening, but then the message appears, and after clicking on OK, it closes.
It's not open fully; so, I am not able to see any e-mails, folders,
calendar, or status messages at the bottom.

How do I login under another user account when I am logged into Windows with
my user name? I've never done this before.

Once I am logged into as another users, how do I delete my user profile?

If you use OWA, and logon as that user account, does all the user's email
show up?

If so, then I believe the Outlook profile is corrupt. To create a new one,
you can delete the user Outlook Profile by going into Control Panel, Mail,
and delete the profile. Then you'll want to delete the OST file. To find the
location of the OST, make sure the View options are set to allow to see
hidden files and system files. Then go to the location and delete, or at
least rename it (holding on to the old one just in case) depending on
operating system:

In XP and Windows 2000:
drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

Windows Vista:
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook

You will also want to preserve the NK2 file (the Outlook drop-down
previously used addresses list):

XP and Windows 2000:
c:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application data\Microsoft\Outlook

Windows Vista:
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outloo k

If Vista was upgraded from Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outloo k

Then follow this to create a new one:

Ace,

I followed the steps you outlined below, but I continue to get the second
error message:

The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchang is
unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.

I decided in the Profile setting to set Outlook to "prompt" which profile to
use. When I do this, I got a new set of steps to follow, but those didn't
work either. I did get a message that the name could not be resolved. Does
this mean something else might be the problem?

Starting to sound like a simple resolution problem. Please post an ipconfig
/all from this machine and from the SBS to evaluate your configuration and
rule out any basic config issues.

Thanks,
Ace

Has this ever worked?

Note that check name will not work when first setting up the profile.

Open the home page of RWW, and follow the instructions to set up Outlook.
Delete the old mail profile first, if it exists.

Also note that if you're using Vista or Windows 7, you need to run IE as
administrator to install the certificate.
