OUTLOOK EXPRESS & OUTLOOK - READING EMAILS IN MIME FORMAT - PLS HE

I have been using Outlook Express for some years and found it very useful.
A few days ago I have downloaded a Microsoft Update and since then all the
emails are being received in MIME format. Then I have tried Outlook and the
same problem is being encountered. On the other hand, I manage to read the
same email without encoding problems from the website of my Internet Service
Provider. I have managed to solve this problem momentarily by means of
system restore in Windows XP but after some time I do encounter the same
problem.
Is there anybody out there who is able to help me please?
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards from seatbcsv.

[crosspost to OE General & OL General]

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Win2K SP4) when
posting to this newsgroup. In this case, also post your MS Office/Outlook
version (e.g., Office 2003 SP3).

What "Microsoft Update" did you install a few days ago? Did you install it
manually (via Microsoft Update website) or via Automatic Updates? Is
Automatic Updates even enabled?

How have you determined that all OE and OL messages "are being received in
MIME format"? Is the option to read all messages in plain text enabled in
both OE and OL?

I am using:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1 2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
Outlook Express 6.00.29005512 xpsp.080413-2105
Office Office Outlook 11.8217.8221.SP3

The updates that I had downloaded were KB967715 and KB961118.
Windows Automatic Updates is enabled.

The read all messages in plain text is not selected in Outlook Express.
I have typed the first few sentences from an email that I have received by
means of OE. I think that this is MIME format.

From ********@****.com Sat Mar 07 06:56:41 2009
Return-Path: <**********@****.com>
Delivered-To: ********@*******.***
Received: (qmail 16749 invoked by uid 515); 7 Mar 2009 06:56:40 -0000
Received: from ***.***.**.** by mailer2.*******.net (envelope-from <********
@**** com>, uid 508) with qmail-scanner-1.25st
(perlscan: 1.25st.
I have cleared the addresses and inserted asterisks instead.

As far as I know I have not changed ANY settings in OE and Outlook in the
last days. I have scanned the computer system by Bit Defender Anti Virus and
Super Antispyware and the problem does not seem to be related to malware or
spyware.
Thanks in advance.

Best Regards from seatbcsv.

Most mail messages are in MIME format. What you appear to be seeing is the
headers of the messages and not the rendering of the message, which would
suggest something is malformed in the arrived message (try CTRL-F3 on any
message and you will see the full headers and all). Why the updates
apparently caused the problem is unclear or that they did is unclear. You
might try reinstalling them (disable antivirus when doing so) and seeing if
they in fact reproduce the errors.

I have pressed CTRL- F3 on an email and I have got the following message.
X-BitDefenderWKS-SpamStamp: v1, build 2.8.11.63381, bayes score:
0(0), pbayes score: 0(0), neunet score: 439(217), flags: [LONG_LINE;
NN_DATE_EMPTY_ADN; SIGN_NO_LINK_NMD_08; LEGIT_SUMM_200_WORDS;
B_HAS_EMAIL_NMD_08; MORE_INFORMATION_ADN], total: 217(725)
X-BitDefenderWKS-Spam: No - 217
.....etc.

I forgot to tell you that the 'From' and 'Subject' are not being shown in
the Inbox. On the other hand these are visible in the Outbox and the Sent
Items Folders. For instance I have tried to send an email to myself. The
'Subject' and the 'To' of the email were cleary visible in the Outbox but
these have disappeared in the Inbox when I received the email.

Best Regards from seatbcsv.

Did you only recently install or upgrade BitDefender Internet Security? I
agree with Steve that neither KB967715 nor KB961118 would cause the
behavior.

See if disabling BitDefender's AntiSpam *and* Email Scanning (incoming &
outgoing) correct the problem. Neither of them "play nice" with OE (and
possibly OL, too).

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm

Also set IE7 as your default browser.

It's likely, then, that your mail scanner (either the antispam or -virus or
both) is interfering with the correct interpretation of the message. DIsable
them and try again.

Dear Sir,

I have disabled Bit Defender real time protection momentarily as instructed.
Besides, incoming and outgoing messages were not scanned. Then, I have sent
an email from the same computer and program to my inbox by means of Outlook
express. I have received the message below. (I have changed email addresses
and IP addresses on this message to seatbcsv or to ***) I would like to
point out that the message is showing normally in the sent items area of
Outlook! Furthermore a part of the message below states that "This is a
multi-part message in MIME format." This is strange, isn't it???

Is this what you are seeing in the Inbox or Ctrl-F3?

Are you using the Main Identity? What happens if you create a new Identity?
You sent a html message.
