Outlook Express Automatically Starts After SP2 Update

I am running Windows XP Home Edition and just recently downloaded and
installed SP2 successfully. However, now my mail program (Outlook Express)
always automatically starts when I log in. Actually, which ever mail program
is set as my default in my Internet Options, that program automaticallly
starts.

I made sure that there is nothing in my startup folder. Does anyone know
why this is happening or better yet, how can I make my mail program from not
automatically starting up.

Any help is appreciated.

With some help from a discussion group member, I was able to figure out the
problem and find a solution. Here is my reply detailing what I did if anyone
cares...

Thanks Steve! I took your advice and ran the System Configuration Utility
by running "msconfig." I then proceeded to the Startup tab and with trial
and error I deselected/selected different startup items and with several
restarts I was able to find that there was a specific startup item that was
causing my mail program to automatically start.

The culprit was....

Startup Item: Hcontrol
Command: C:\WINDOWS\ATK0100\Hcontrol.exe
Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Once I unchecked that and restarted, the problem was solved. I have no idea
what that item is, but I don't care. I'm just happy that Outlook is no
longer automatically starting up.

Thanks again, Rick

HControl.exe = Hotkeys on an ASUS Notebook
http://computercops.biz/startuplist-1384.html
http://www.windowsstartup.com/wso/browse.php?l=8

HControl's connection to OE? Who knows? Most of us are recommending that
those with laptops, especially older ones, contact the manufacturer for info
on upgrading to SP2. I would not upgrade until I got an "all clear" from
the manufacturer as well as download links for any model-specific drivers
which SP2 would require.

Similarly, laptop owners are discourages from formatting and installing a
non-OEM version of Windows until they have the necessary, laptop-specific
files and drivers on hand which will be needed.

In short, the problem wasn't WinXP SP2 or Outlook Express, Rick. Contact
ASUS for more information.

How is anybody supposed to know that? There needs to be some sort of
mechanism from preventing programs from sticking themselves in the startup
items whenever they are installed.

I dunno. Figuring OP has an ASUS notebook, I'd imagine HControl.exe was
installed and stuck in Startups by default.
