Outlook express

I am so confused w/this Vista. I sent this before but cannot find the
question anymore. I transferred all files from my PC(XP) to laptop(Vista).
I cannot find my Outlook Express, I like to do email via Outlook. Do I have
it, where can I find it?

It is now called Windows Mail and it's on the Start Menu.

Hi, Jude.

As Neil Harley said, Outlook Express has been largely written for Vista and
it is now called Windows Mail. Perhaps the most significant change is that
the database of messages is much different. Where 1,000 emails or newsgroup
posts were stored in a single *.dbx file in OE, they are stored as 1,000
separate .eml or .nws files in WM. This prevents the problem that many
users had where corruption in a single message could wipe out the entire
message store; now, only the one message might be lost.

You know, of course, that Outlook (OL 2007, OL XP, etc.) is a completely
separate program from Outlook EXPRESS. And, of course, separate from
Windows Mail, too. Outlook does not do newsgroups, but both Outlook and
Windows Mail (and Outlook Express) can handle email.

For most users, the only problem with the transition to Windows Mail in
Vista is importing the OE database. Usually, the problem is with giving
ourselves permission in Vista to see the contents of the message store from
OE. Even the user interface of WM looks almost identical to OE.

When I sort messages here by "From", I see only this one message from
"Jude", and my message store includes messages back to 1/25/07. Perhaps you
used a different name when you posted your previous question.

Do you not see a threading problem if you move messages from the
Import Folder to a local folder?

Hi, Gerry.

Yes, I do see a threading problem. Not just from the Import Folder, either.
I often lose threading for messages that are wrongly sent to Junk E-mail and
then moved back. And sometimes the thread gets lost or broken for no reason
that I can figure out.

But that does not seem to have anything to do with Jude's remark that he
"sent this before but cannot find the question anymore." Even when I
UNcheck WM's "Group Messages by Conversation", there's only this one post by
Jude since 1/25/07. If he asked the question before, he must have used a
different name.

I haven't linked the threading issue to the Junk folder. Not much
has gone there, although it has sent some of my own messages there
<G>. I am not generally using my email address for email in Windows
Mail, apart from DTS messages. So far not a single item of true spam
!Amazing! I suppose I need to extend my testing beyond DTS.

Jude has posted to three different newsgroups that I am aware of
concerning Outlook Express in the last 7 days and another on a
different topic. Vista.installation.setup, vista.file.management and
vista.mail. These were made using Internet Explorer, as was the post
to this newsgroup. This explains why he can't find his own posts.

I've seen your DTS posts about the threading issue and started drafting a
response, but it got so confusing - to ME - that I haven't finished it and
sent it yet. I'll try to get it out in the next day or two.

Thanks for tracking down Jude's other question posts. Far too many novice
posters ask a question but then never come back to see the answer! :>(

Yes, Outlook Express is 'replaced' by Windows Mail BUT Windows Mail does not
connect to Hotmail where OE did. I found this unacceptable. After attempting
to find and load a copy of OE to Vista I discovered Windows Live
Mail -Desktop Beta. This works much like OE (better) and seems to be much
the same as Windows Mail but allowing Hotmail access. The only problem I
have found is that my Kaspersky Internet Security Suite does not have a
anti-Spam plug-in (yet?). However the Microsoft version seems to worrk well.
