After installing Outlook Express displayed "Unable To Open This Email" for
every email and "An error occurred while attempting to open the Address Book
file".

This message was also displayed when trying to open the following file in
explorer:
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\%USERNAME%.wab

I googled for this message and found this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223797&sd=RMVP
%USERNAME%.wab was not read only.

I don't know if OE still knows that the Address Book was migrated from OE5.
OE6 probably upgraded it when I moved to XP. Uninstalling this Windows Update
fixed the problem. So shabby.

Shabby? - hmm thats pretty mild.

Thats why I don't use OE its highly prone to disaster, the backup /
transfer system is a joke and the insecure unencrypted address book
features in every e mail virus out there as prime spreader of malware.

Try Courier Mail, or Thunderbird.

Is MS Office and Outlook also installed? Did you also install an update for
MS Outlook?

I'm not touching this patch with a ten foot pole. Already reports at
dslreports in the MS update thread of the very problem you are reporting.
Cannot open any mail in OE after installing this patch. You have to
uninstall it. Well, I won't bother installing it in the first place. I
always wait and read reports of problems before I install and I install only
one patch at time and see how things go before I install next patch. This is
one to avoid.

Windows XP with SP2 installed?

Could you please list the file versions of the following files on your machine:
wab32.dll, wabimp.dll, inetcomm.dll and msoe.dll

TIA,
Freudi

Could you please provide an URL to that thread? Thanks!

I can't confirm that anyway. Looking at the headers of your posting,
you're on Windows XP SP2 and have KB887797 installed, right?

What you may want to try:
Uninstall KB887797 via Software in the Control Panel prior to install
KB911567. Or leave KB887797 installed and install KB900930 prior to
KB911567. Link to KB900930:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

One more note: Make sure, that you have OE shut down before installing
any update. Make also sure, that you shutdown *any* program running in
the background while installing an update.

Bye,
Freudi

You didn't ment http://www.dslreports.com/forum/rema...=9999~start=20
did you? There's only *one* report concerning KB911567, so that's anything
but representative, IOW that's *not* indicating a general problem with the
patch at all.

Freudi

Microsoft Office XP is installed with Office SP3. The Office version of
Outlook is not installed.

After uninstalling KB911567 the versions of those dlls are:
wab32.dll 6.0.2900.2527
wabimp.dll 6.0.2900.2527
inetcomm.dll 6.0.2900.2527
msoe.dll 6.0.2900.2527

I use Outlook 2000 at work and dislike the fact that it has one giant .psd
file containg all my emails. It makes backups very hard and email text
extraction impossible if it goes wrong.

I wish Microsoft would make a clean, simple and small email reader.

Mandy, please see my first reply in this thread and confirm that what I've
outlined does /not/ apply to your machine.
