Outlook Express update - Why?

Why does Microsoft Update insist that I should install an Outlook
Express update. I don't have Outlook Express installed (if they have
not installed it again during some update, can't see it anywhere :-)

You may not use it but it is installed. Even if you NEVER use it the
files are part of the OS and thus, are susceptible to any vulnerability
that the update addresses.

What about the Windows Adressbook?
How did you "uninstall" OE or prevented its installation on which
Windows version?

Hi Freudi,
You seem to lnow more about Outlook Express than anyone else answering the
questions. So I will endeavour to ask you, in particular, about - basically
the same question with perhaps a little more detail on possible solutions,
other than allowing outlook express to run on my computer.
When installing Win XP Pro (SP2) I did everything in my power to NOT
install and to remove OE after installing WinXP (didn't access the registry
though). Now I get the notices for OE Updates and I do not wish to have
Outlook express on my computer. Like most intelligent average people I have
found too many invader problems(ie., Trojans, malware, viruses, spyware,
etc.) with outlook express and didn't want it on my machine. I don't have any
desire or need for this program and feel I should have the right to make that
choice.

I've been using OE since 97 and have never, ever, gotten a virus from
it. OE is bound to IE which is bound to XP. You're an idiot to try and
uninstall OE.

That's untrue - definitly.

I really don't know, what you've tried concrete.

If you've fon too many invader problems, you may have to rethink the
way you're handling attachements at all. This is independend from
the client you're using. Indeed, there's *no* known security problem
in actual OE versions that could leed to "invader problems" without
user action.

Anyhow, feel free to ask back in the OE6 or windowsxp.setup
newsgroup.

Bye,
Freudi

Removing OE from Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components does
not remove Windows Address Book > MS06-016 (911567) address vulnerabilities
in Address Book.
