outlook vs. windows live mail

I have been using outlook for over ten years. now windows live mail is
kinda interfering with my outlook because it gets my mail at the same time
as my outlook. and when I use the outlook I put various messages from
family and friends and ads and stuff in various folders so they are not on
the inbox. now suddenly mail from friends that came in my inbox is now
going to junk mail. and I found out when I was on windows live and clicked
on the mail tab I had over 700 messages in the inbox and I thought I had
filed and deleted and took care of those messages. I use a pst file to
store them and each year I create a new pst file for the current year. so I
am confused over the mail on windows live. should I stop using outlook and
use windows live? I use the desktop and the laptop to go to the same email
address. I guess the outlook newsgroup doesn't know about this because I
can't get any advice there about this problem. thanks, charlie

Only you know the reason you are using both programs.
If you don't want to use one of them, remove it.

It depends on many things . . . . first what type of account is it - HTTP,
POP3, IMAP? On WLHotmail, do you have SPAM / JUNK settings that could be
rerouting your friends' mail? On the desktop side, do you have "Leave a
copy on the Server enabled (in Outlook, WLM, both)?

Reminds me when I had Outlook 97 and Outlook Express 4 set up at the same time about
15 yrs ago. Which ever client I opened first was the one that downloaded my emails.
Answer was to use one or the other

In Outlook, you must have 'Leave a copy of downloaded messages on the
server' checked.
It would be under Properties of the account. I am not sure where.
WLMail is set to Leave a copy by default.

Is the mail only in junk mail in WLMail?

Charles,
You'll have to decide which client to use..but if your objective is to use a pst file as an archive each year..then Outlook should
be your choice..

You then have two options..
- remove the accounts in WLM
- leave the accounts in WLM, ensure you are using Pop3 and configure the account to Leave Messages on the server to ensure Outlook
downloads all messages. WLM will only download messages remaining in the Inbox, but it will not eliminate the ability for Outlook
to do so.

I am getting the junk mail on my outlook connection. I have been using that
for years. I don't know how I got the wlm connection except it is maybe
when I got my laptop recently and was in st louis and wanted to check email
and I had to go to windows live to do it. now I have the outlook connector
on the laptop so both look the same now. I leave messages on the server
until I get to the desktop and store them in the proper folders. then I
don't want to see them when I look at the email with the laptop. from
several other responses to my problem, I need to eliminate windows live mail
from both computers but use outlook instead. btw, I think my account uses
MAPI configuration when I view my account settings. thanks for the help.

Mapi is the term Outlook refers to an http account for a Hotmail type account in the Outlook Connector. That same account in WLM
when using http will show(account's servers tab)as as using the Http server

WLM is a desktop client that allows one to log on to Windows Live to sync contacts, calendar with the Live ID used for signing on
to Windows Live in WLM.

Leaving messages on the server is unique only to setting up an account to use the pop3 server. It does not apply to an account in
the Outlook Connector or a Live ID Hotmail type account using http in WLM.

Before removing any accounts in WLM or removing WLM...ensure that all messages of importance are also present in Outlook.

The only account I show on my windows live mail on the laptop is the
newsgroups. so it must be on the windows live account on the server where
my windows live photos are for the family. I will try to gently delete that
email account... charlie

Whoah!!!! Let's back up a bit..

It's extremely important when posting in a public forum that correct terminology is used(initial request or acquired in the course
of subsequent responses).

Windows Live = all Live services and application software under the Windows Live 'umbrella'

The following are the primary Windows Live services
Account - account.live.com
Profile - profile.live.com
Skydrive - skydrive.live.com
Contacts - contacts.live.com or people.live.com (both resolve to the same destination)
Calendar - calendar.live.com
Photos - photos.live.com
Hotmail - mail.live.com or hotmail.com (both resolve to the same destination and called Windows Live Hotmail)
** Only Live ID's using Hotmail type accounts(Hotmail.com, Live.com, Msn.com) have a 'mail' Inbox. Third party email addresses
registered as a Live ID(e.g. gmail, yahoo, your isp) do not have a mail Inbox but they do have access to the other above services.

The following are the primary Windows Live applications(installable software)
Windows Live Mail (locally installed desktop email client)
Windows Live Messenger (instant messaging)
Windows Live PhotoGallery (photo viewer, organizer, and editor)
Windows Live Writer (blogging)
Windows Live Movie Maker (create, burn, publish movies to your pc/external media/external web site)
Windows Live Sync (automatic file sync/share across multiple computers)
Windows Live Toolbar (toolbar for Internet Explorer)
Windows Live Family Safety (parental control for web surfing)
Outlook Connector(more recently renamed as the Hotmail Connector for Office 2010)
Office Live Add-In (free online storage and sharing of documents; works with Excel, Word, Powerpoint)

NOTE: A mail account associated with a Hotmail type account(hotmail, live, and/or msn.com) can not be deleted from the server.

Hotmail type accounts(hotmail, live, and/or msn.com) are capable of using two different protocols for sending/receiving mail in
Windows Live Mail and Outlook
Pop3 - Windows Live Mail and Outlook (Outlook Connector not required for Outlook)
Http - Windows Live Mail and Outlook(Outlook Connector required for Outlook and applicable only to Outlook versions 03/07/10)

To make it easier for everyone to help you...when referencing the all encompassing term 'Windows Live' it helps to be specific for
two important reasons.
1. we can best understand your request or problem
2. we don't provide incorrect information

As an example...it would help if we knew the type of protocol in use(pop3 or http) and where(Windows Live Mail, Outlook, or the
Outlook Connector) for each Hotmail type account....since account removal in one may have different results than removal in
another..e.g. deleting not only the account but messages!
