How to overcome the Windowsupdate error number 80070017 - Data Error ( Cyclic Redundant Check ) ?

After very deep digging, I finally found out that the main culprit of
my repeated failure in updating my windows setup via windowsupdate is
error number 80070017 - which means the "Cyclic Redundant Check".

I thought, if it's just a CRC error, then I just go and download the
file again, hopefully this time I'll get EVERYTHING in correct order.
Or so I hope.

What I got is another round of the same 80070017 error.

And so I thought this maybe the fact that they files are in the wutemp
folder. So I delete all the files, and even the directory. And I went
to the temp folder and deleted everything.

I repeated the windowsupdate thing again. This time, the same error
all over again.

I have NO IDEA how this 80070017 error started, and I have no idea how
to break this 80070017 curse.

Please help !!

Hi,

I do not know if this will help but I have found that most
of the previous MS suggestions to the new V5 windows
update software do not work well. I guess they did not
test it enough. What I mean is that try to, instead, look
for programs or settings that affect the way you connect
to the Internet with IE, like IE add-ons, programs that
will hide your IP, your HOSTS files, proxy settings,
trusted and un-trusted sites in IE, some services and
programs that either need to be started or need to pass
through your firewall.

The error number helps but it is not 100% the way to go.
Hope this helps.

There may be a mention of your condition there.

Is your system clock/date correct? If it is off by a lot (months),
Windows update will not work.

Here is one thing to try... Most of the following shall never return
again, and were work files, pre-V4 Windows Update:

(a) "START, Settings, Folder Options, View tab"; bolt "Show all
files" & UNcheck "Hide file extensions...".
(b) Open Explorer to "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate", and
(c) Delete everything in this folder EXCEPT the V4 folder.
(d) Open the V4 folder, and delete everything in it EXCEPT for the
"iuhist.xml" file.

Try the other measures in this URL...

Your first response to delete the files in the WUTemp folder and even
the folder itself were very intuitive and very correct. Only thing
you didn't do right is do this very same thing to the Internet Cache
where the files are also stored. Internet Options, center of the
box - delete Temporary Internet Files. Any joy?

I like to stay in the NG. I don't see the beginning of this thread.
Anyway... for

Just do PRECISELY THAT & nothing more. IOW, keep...

(a) "C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate"
(b) The V4 folder in that, &
(c) Keep "iuhist.xml" inside of V4.

That is all I know about it. Do it once to purge the stuff from the old
site. They won't come back again. What does come back is a lot less to
worry over.
