Hi Eno--
1) When you say it won't start in safe mode, I'm not sure what you mean.
F8's Win Advanced Options menu has 3 opportunities to use SM for system
restore. You should try everyone of them because one might work when others
do not.
SM
SM with networking
SM with command prompt
At the prompt you would type the command to use for
system restore at the safe mode cmd prompt is:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
You haven't exhausted all your options until you've tried all of them.
2) Try getting to startup repair again after cleaning that DVD by putting
drops of cleaning solution on with a cloth and cleaning from the center out.
It might be your DVD needs cleaning.
3) You have another option provided the DVD is cleaned and works--you can
put in the DVD and do a repair install by doing an inplace upgrade. You
elect to install, then after the language screen you select upgrade and
install on the same partition/drive where you have the OS now. I've done
them and they work. You lose nothing.
