Hi,

I keep getting the 'This page cannot be displayed' error in Windows Update
when I click on 'Review and install updates,' after the scan has been
successfully completed (it tells me that there are 8 critical updates to
download). I get the same error when trying to follow the link to 'Critical
Updates and Service Packs' in the left side navigation bar.

I've tried reinstalling IE 6.0 and SP1. Have also tried copying iuident.cab
file to C:\program files\windows update\v4\temp, as well as resetting
defualts for IE security settings and entering download.microsoft.com,
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com, windowsupdate.microsoft.com,
download.windowsupdate.com, and http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com as
trusted sites, but to no avail. Also tried running net.exe stop wuauserv,
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll, regsvr32.exe wups.dll, regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll,
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll, regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll, and net.exe start
wuauserv. When doing this, system indicated "LoadLibrary ("wuapi.dll")
failed - The specified module could not be found. This error also appeared
for the wups.dll and wucltui.dll files.

PC is running Win 200 (SP5) and IE 6.0.2800.1106.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's why you got those errors. The tips you are using were created
for people who are using WUv5 (such as XP users) but W2K users
apparently are still forced to use WUv4. There are different modules
in the two implementations.

"Page cannot be displayed" could be a problem with your DNS
or your dnscache or your HOSTS file. Do you know anything
about the URL that isn't working? E.g. what is in the Address bar
after the error?

I don't know anything about the DNS, dnscache, or HOSTS file. The URL
doesn't change, I think the WU page is frames based or something similar.
And of course Microsoft has things so screwed up that you can only run WU via
IE and you can't copy any of the links on the page to paste them into another
browser or see where they lead. The URL that's in there is
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp, which is what comes up after
directing the browser to windowsupdate.com.

Any other ideas? I need to try to figure this out ASAP as I'm visiting my
folks on vacation and am leaving tomorrow.

Thanks.

Robert,

Looks like you were on the right track. I called tech support for my DSL
connection and figured out that the DSL modem is also a wireless router. I
had just installed a separate wireless router inbetween the modem and the PC.
I'm guessing that there was some discrepancy with the IP addresses since
both routers use DHCP, something that the Microsoft WU servers probably
didn't like. I've disconnected the Belkin wireless router and everything
seems to be working fine now.

Thanks again for your help.
