Using Vista Home Premium 32 bit with SP2 all updated. Running avast anti
virus, comodo firefirewall, Spybot, ad-Aware, Super anti spyware all up to
date.
Everytime I open the control panel and click on Windows Update I get a blank
page with the message: the page failed to load. I installed an update
yesterday 10/7 so I know it was working then. The only software I installed
was a scrapbooking program, but I unintsalled it already. I have done a virus
and spyware scan and eyerything comes back clean. This problem only started
today. Would appreciate a
any help concerning this.

Thanks,
hammymom

I am using IE 7.0.6002.18005. Have tried IE 8, but it is too slow. I think I
need some sort of update for the update page to work properly. This has
happened before but I do not remember what the solution was.

A dumb question, if you don't mind.
After you had un-install IE8, had you checked if IE7 had all its defaults ?

I reinstalled Vista a couple of months ago. When I reintsalled it, I did not
install IE 8, I stayed with IE 7 and did not upgrade to IE 8. So, IE 7 still
has all the defaults set and everything. Didn't change any settings on it.

Why did you reinstall Vista a couple of months ago and how did you do it?

Have you had this problem ever since you reinstalled Vista? Were you having
similar problems before you reinstalled Vista?

I reinstalled Vista because it was getting a little bogged down and a
little sluggish. I reinstalled Vista from the system operating disc that
came with my computer-Gateway.
This problem only started 10/7. Before 10/7, I had no problems
downloading and installing updates. Even after I reinstalled Vista,
updates worked just fine-no problems.
Before I reinstalled Vista, the only problem I had was with Windows
Update Catalog and that issue was solved.
Do you think installing IE 8 would help? If you think it might help,
I'll do it. If this problem does not get fixed, I won't be able to keep
Vista updated.

No, I would not recommend upgrading to IE8 right now nor do I think IE had
anything to do with the problem.

Did you do a Repair Install (AKA In-place Upgrade) of Vista or did you do a
clean install? (If you didn't back-up your personal data before
reinstalling and it was there after you did the reinstall, you did a Repair
Install.)

Backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Thank you for the help. Hopefully I won't have to do a clean install
just yet. I did a system restore and went back to this Monday when
everything was stable and so far the Windows update page is working
properly. Hopefully this clears up the problem. If I have any more
problems with the update page, I'll do a clean install. I'll keep my
fingers crossed and hope that it doesn't come to that.

Thanks again,
hammymom
