Recently my Dell XPS m1530 automatically installed a Windows Update and now I
am having issues. I am repeatedly told to update by a bubble on the taskbar.
When I attempt to run Windows Update, the window for the program is blank
with the message "The page failed to load" in the center of the window.
Furthermore, when trying to run nearly any application, I recieve the message
"File system error (65535)." Also, many of the icons have been changed, for
things such as the Recycle Bin, Desktop, Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents,
and many more. Moreover, a bubble pops up on the taskbar notifying me of
Problem Reports and Solutions that wants to fix my computer. Upon clicking
this, a window pops up for a second and quickly exits itself. The control
panel will no longer load. I have tried to run chkdsk, but that will not
work. Also, I have tried system restore, but it noted I had errors, tried to
fix them, failed to do so, and now claims I have no restore points.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Windows version? What update was installed? Did the update fail to
install?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit; the update on 6/25/08 according to the logs
is the last one that started to download. I think it may have encountered an
error. Since it says windows recovered from an error after restarting; I was
in the shower at the time. For antivirus and firewall, I am using TrendMicro.

Judging from similar threads here in the past month or so, the installation
may have failed and the behavior may be due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection,
all of which is protected by a rootkit.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
