Page Fault error Stop 0x00000050 and KB941229?

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64. It came preinstalled on a new laptop
and has been running fine until yesterday. Instead of returning from
sleep yesterday afternoon, it rebooted itself. I got a BSOD with Page
fault in nonpaged area - stop 0x00000050

That was all I could write down until it disappeared when Vista
restarted. (I've since fixed that). This kept happening and I was
unable to even boot into Safe Mode.

Eventually I got a shot at Startup Repair. (I can't remember just how
that happened - would like to know for future problems.) This did a
System Restore. This seemed to fix things.

I got a Diagnosis and Repair Details report. Gotta love Vista for this
sort of help. In XP I doubt I'd ever be able to have fixed things!

Anyway, it listed a number of tests - all with 0x0 after them, which
I'm assuming is "Pass." Root cause found: a patch is preventing the
system from starting. Repair action - System Restore. Results:
completely sucessful.

Since I hadn't installed anything new yesterday, I looked into the
automatic updates. Found that Cumulative for MC x64 KB941229 was now
listed as pending. It also appeared in my update history and found it
showed as Failed on 11-17 and then just above it as Sucessful on 11-17.

I'm thinking KB941229 was my problem. It failed on the first attempt
to install. It then installed sucessfully. I *think* it then caused my
problelms, as System Restore evidently rolled back to just before it
installed, as it's now showing as pending.

My last most recent software install (no recent hardware installs to
this machine) was Network Magic that came with my new Wifi router, which
was installed by my desktop the day before. It's still installed after
the System Restore and I was able to boot.

Could KB941229 have caused my problems? Is it an essential update or
can I safely ignore it for a while?

Hi Nelia,

Welcome to the Vistax64.com forum. arty:

From your description, it sounds like the KB941229 may have been the
cause since it had a failed to install the first time. It may have been
interrupted during installation causing the problem. It would be up to
you if you consider it to be needed. You can read up on what all it is
for here.

'October 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista'

If you would like to try and install it again, then this tutorial will
show you how to easily uninstall if needed.

If you would prefer to just ignore it, then this tutorial will show you
how to hide it so it will not keep showing up in the available updates
list. You can always unhide it when you like.

Shawn,

It's been 24 hours without a crash, so the USB drive looks to be the
culpret. Since I can't put it into the computer with a crash within
seconds, I'll replace it.

Thanks again for your help on this!

Nelia,

Glad to hear your problem is resolved. Sorry you lost the USB drive
though.
