Windows XP what?
(Version and Service Pack Level...?)

What is a "mega crash"?
(Details would be good.)

Sounds like a Vundo infestation to me.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

If it seemed to have failed, do this:

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate any error
code(s) or explanation as to why the page cannot be displayed.

You can copy/paste the last 50 or so lines here...

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

Hi,
Thanks for your help.
I am running Windows xp straight off the application disc.
I am trying to download Service Packs 1, 2 and 3 too upgrade my computer.
But in Wndows Explorer it will not allow me to access the page.
I have taken note of all the above help hints and I will try to resolve the
issue using your advice.

Download the entire installation files manually for SP2 and SP3. That
should be all you need.

Ah, now we know the rest of the story!

Did you do a Repair Install or a format & clean install, Ben?

Assuming the latter (only!), see

I,with the help of the good people here and at HP.com have fixed this problem!
I ran Microsofts Malicious Programme Removal Tool and did the following as
advised by HP Computers:
From your email, I understand that an error code "0x8DDD0018" is displayed
when you are trying to install Microsoft updates in your HP Pavilion 750.uk
Desktop PC.

This issue may occur due to any of the following reasons:

* Cryptographic Services is set to disabled.
* Log file or database corruption exists in the
%Systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 folder.
* Other Windows files are corrupted or missing.

Ben, to resolve the error, perform the following steps:

1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press
ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit

4. Try to install the updates to Windows again.

It did the trick.
I would like to thank everybody who help me.
Ben Quinn.

I did a re-install from "Factory Shipped Restore Option" which is to say a
complete restore from scratch!
One I ran Microsoft Malicious Programme Tool it completely did the trick!
I just ran my own Anti Virus (McAfee) and than did as advised by
Hewlett-Packard.
I know where I got the Trojan and Viruses!
Subsim.com, SilentHunterIII Forum for game Modders! I even know the thread I
think.
I want to say thanks to you "PA Bear [MS MVP]" you got me up and running
again!
Thanks a million,
Ben.
