partitioning drive in Vista

I tried to partition my hard drive using Vista and followed all the
instructions. Upon completion, the message "insufficient disk space to
complete this operation" appeared, yet I was trying to partition 40GB from
120GB.
Now, this 40Gb is declared as "unallocated space and I have no access to it.
Any suggestions please as to how to restore the hard drive and grab back my
40GB or additional instruction as to how to access the unallocated 40GB

Take a look at FDISK (a DOS command).

Expand your partition to include the free space again.
