Password to NAS devices after upgrade from XP (RC1)

Before upgrdaing from XP to RC1 I had two NAS devices in my workgroup (i.e.
home network) that both had userids and passwords. They worked fine and I was
prompted by XP each time that I accessed them.
Since upgrading to RC1 I can no longer accces these two devices - the
Userid/passwords are not accepted.
I know they still work as I can access them from other PCs running XP.

Please try the following:

- Click Start
- Click Control Panel
- Click System and Maintenance
- Click Administrative Tools
- Double-Click Local Security Policy
- In the left pane, click the triangle next to Local Policy
- In the left pane, click Security Options
- In the right pane near the bottom, double-click "Network security: LAN
manager authentication level"
- Click the drop-down box, and click "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session
security if negotiated"
- Click OK

Do you know how I could set it so I dont need to have passwords on the
accounts to access other computers on my workgroup? Thanks

I sure hope it can't be done. It shouldn't be done. Maybe you get paid to
allow the spammers to use your systems to keep telling the rest of us about
all the wonderful drugs they have to sell.

What? No. I have a workgroup and dont want to have a password on one of the
systems, but still want to access files on it. I did it pre 5744

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking how to remotely
authenticate to a windows computer using an account with a blank password?

You will need to modify a security setting on the computers you wish to be
able to access using an account that has a blank password:

Change "Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console
logon only" to disabled using the Local Security Policy editor as described
previously.

Jimmy you gave me the following answer to my NAS porblem last year but today
I've loaded a purchased copy of Vista and I can't find the 'Local Security
Policy' option - any ideas? I'm using Vista Home.

Hello,

Unfortunately, Local Security Policy isn't available in the Vista Home
editions.

Instead, you will need to manually edit the registry:

- Click start
- Type: regedit
- Press enter
- In the left, expand these folders:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\

- In the left, click on the folder named:

Lsa

- In the right, double-click "LmCompatibilityLevel"
- Type the number 1 and press enter
- Restart your computer
