I would like to password protect a couple of folders I have but in searching
Vista Help am not finding a way to do this. Is there a way to password
protect certain file folders in Vista Home Premium? Thanks.

XP and Vista do not use passwords to protect resources. NT-based operating
systems use permissions based on user account access instead.

Passwording of folders is not supported unless you zip them. When you do
(right click a folder, then "send to > compressed folder") and then open the
zip file, you will find an option under file>"add a password". Otherwise,
use third-party software. Google "password protect folders".

Pravda,
Another approach is to use encryption.
Win+F1 (gets you Vista Help and Support) »
type Encryption into the search box » Enter key »
select the first item listed, Encrypt or decrypt a file or folder

Like WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP before it, Vista's file security
paradigm doesn't rely on, or allow, the crude and cumbersome method of
password protection for individual applications, files, or folders.
Instead, it uses the superior method of explicitly assigning file/folder
permissions to individual users and/or groups.

As a crude work-around, you can place the file in a compressed
folder, and set a password to uncompress the folder to view/access its
contents. Also, some applications allow the user to password-protect
their specific data files. Read the specific application's Help files
for further information on this capability.

Crude and cumbersome? Lol. You've never heard of defense in
depth, huh? :-)

How do you prevent an intruder who's gained access to your account
or the root account from accessing your files? Password protected access
is one way.
