PC hangs on reboot after windows update

Every time windows updates downloads and installs and initiates/requires a
reboot, the pc hangs during reboot usually before the splash screen but also
after restarting and having to do a discheck. The pc can be booted into
safemode. Occasionally after three or four safe mode reboots, the pc will
allow normal mode operation, but it usually requires leaving the pc turned
off for a few hours.
Any ideas?

If it makes a difference that the PC is switched off for a few hours, then
this suggests a hardware problem.

What make of chipset is on the motherboard?

What version of Windows is this?

Can you ensure that the latest updates for the chipset drivers have been
applied, by direct download from the chipset manufacturer? (rather than from
the system manufacturer or motherboard maker).
