PC slows to a crawl after update

Installed MS XP Pro on new system build. I applied the drivers for the
motherboard and then set about updating the system. After a system update,
the PC would then get to the loading windows xp screen and slow to a crawl.
The only extra thing I added in the updates was for my ethernet card, an
Atheros L1 Gigabit LAN built into the motherboard. System restores failed and
the system would behave normally when the driver was no longer installed or
when you booted into safe mode.

Anyone else had this problem?

That's a pretty unique network card.

Are you saying you did the Windows Updates and got the hardware driver for
your network card from the Microsoft Windows Updates? Don't do that.
Microsoft did not make your hardware - they are not the ones that support
it. Go straight to the source and get the latest driver from there. The
'source' in this case will be the web page and support site for your
motherboard manufacturer most likely.

It is indeed. Until I used this ASUS motheboard I had never come across it.

I am saying that I used the original drivers from the motherboard CD and
then updated the driver from the Windows Update Site when it showed up.
Anyway, I had to trash and rebuild the OS again. Thankfully it was a new PC
so no real skin of my nose there.

Do not get hardware drivers from the Microsoft Update web page - unless you
are getting the drivers for Microsoft Hardware. Microsoft did not create
the hardware - it is unlikely they will have the latest driver/support
available for it. Always go to the source (the hardware manufacturer) for
your hardware drivers.
