PC wont start after XP SP2 update

After installation of XP SP2 my PC only starts only in failproof moode. At
that PC I don't have automatic update, but I made the update through the
Internet.
At normal start the first Windows logo appears and then the PC restarts. No
error messages at screen. I have tried to start with no extra devices - just
a clean PC but that doesn't help. To start in VGA moode makes no difference.
When I tried to make a restart from SP 1 those options are not available.
Must I do a total reinstall of Windows or do I have other options?
