PDF files cannot be synced

Problems again with synchronization... (Windows XP/SP3, Active Sync 4.5,
Outlook 2007, HP IPAQ 2790b)
Whenever I try to sync any PDF files from the desktop to the mobile device,
it fails with the message "the specified module was not found". The problem
seems to arise from the tagging process. When I change the PDF conversion
option to "no conversion", the files are synced without any problem. Also,
syncing PDFs from the mobile device to the desktop works flawlessly (no
conversion involved there).
But I'd rather sync the PDFs in the tagged format, because they are more
readable on the mobile device.
I would reinstall ActiveSync if somebody could assure me that this helps.
Anybody there who has any idea?

Well, I suspected this but, sorry to say, this didn't solve the problem.
The worst thing is: I don't know how it came. Syncing and tagging PDFs
worked perfectly for months and suddenly it doesn't work any more.

Anyone any more ideas?

Hi,
The file synchronization does not care what the extension is. It syncs the
files.

Are you able to sync any files? If not then it could be a firewall issue.
The file transfer function requires some of the ports to be open that
ActiveSync setup when it was installed.

Chris, did you read my initial posting? I wrote that >>PDF<< files cannot be
synced >>from desktop to mobile<<. Syncing other files or syncing vice versa
is no problem at all.
And, yes, the file synchronization DOES care about the extension, since
there are different "file conversion options" for each and every file
extension possible! Each file extension may or may not involve a different
conversion module - which seems to be the problem here. As I wrote before: if
I switch to "no conversion" for PDF files, everything syncs beautiful. It's
only that the PDFs are not being tagged then, so they are very hard to read
on the mobile device. That's why I would rather use the conversion - which
brings me back the error message.

Anyone out there that has any more ideas?

Hi Morris, I'm sure we'll find out somehow. It may take a while, though.
What about my question in your own thread? Have you SP3 installed?

Another thing that I suspect is Office 2007. I recently upgraded from
Outlook 2002 to 2007. Maybe there's the hatch. Which version of Outlook do
you use?

Greetings...

I've got SP3, but not Office 2007 - so not sure if that has an impact.
If you follow the Active Sync entry for pdf conversion, it leads to
'c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Reader for Pocket PC\PDFFileFilt.dll' in the
registry.
This file is dated 24/7/2004 and seems to be installed with the Reader for
the PPC.
There are only a couple of registry entries that I could find, this one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{13047EB 9-86CE-4c43-BEE2-E4073C1E340B}
and this one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDFFileFilt.PD FTagCE
Presumably a complete remove/reinstall would recreate them.

Hi Bob,
my respect! This track seems to be really hot. I already had tried a
complete de- and reinstall with no avail, so my first thought was to simply
re-register PDFFileFilt.dll. Now, when I enter "regsrv32 PDFFileFilt.dll", I
get exactly the same message I used to get from ActiveSync: "the specified
module was not found".
It seems clear to me that there is a coherence between the DLL and the
tagging problem.
I'll be back here as soon as I found out more.
Thanx a lot for this tip, Bob!
Greetings...

I've just synced an untagged pdf and tried to follow what happened with
Filemon. Everything runs under the control of WCESMgr. It leaves a log in
the system temp directory but this didn't show much - it might show more if
the process hadn't worked. The tagging part doesn't seem to involve anything
much outside the PPC Reader directory (apart from yhe usual MS libs)
although it does refer to 'atmlib.lib' in system32 and also a font database
in c:\program files\common files\adobe\typespt\fntnames.db: there are dozens
and dozens of references to this. Don't know what software creates this
path.
ActiveSync 4.5 also has a repair option so doesn't necessarily have to be
completely removed/reinstalled.

Hi Bob,
let us go back one step. I just want to make sure that I can see the same
things as you.
What exactly do you mean when you write "If you follow the Active Sync entry
for pdf conversion, it leads to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Reader for
Pocket PC\PDFFileFilt.dll' in the registry." ? Which "entry for the pdf
conversion" do you mean? In my ActiveSync extended options, it only says
"Adobe Acrobat Tagged PDF Converter (*pdf)".

Greetings....
