Pen doesn't work

My friend has windows live messenger and when he tries to use it, it says:

To use hand write feature you may have to install or update software.
(or click help ... but help doesn't work).

He is using the same verion 8 and the same build as me ... but mine works
and his doesn't.

Any thought?

He needs the ink APIs installed. To do so, just have him install the Windows Journal Viewer:
