Performance of Security Updates

Has anyone else noticed how much there machines have slowed down with the
latest updates. I've had to go back and uninstall the security updates
because my machine became unbearable. I have a 2.2G machine with 640Meg of
memory running XP SP2 with all the lastest updates until now. I've now
turned off the automatic updates because I can't stand the degregation.

Not here...
I've got 5 computers, 2 notebooks and 3 desktops all completely up to date
with all XP updates with no degradation of performance at all. One of them
is a notebook with a PIII 700 and 256 MB ram and it runs exactly the same as
it always has. If there was a problem with the updates I would expect this
machine to be most affected. My best machine has an AMD 3200+ Athlon with 1
GB ram and runs all the games my son can throw at it with no difference in
frame rate etc. after all the updates. All machines are checked for spyware,
temp files cleared and drives defragged on a regular basis.

Bob,
Do you also run Norton AntiVirus? I'm wondering if there is an interaction
with that.

I have noticed that most anti-virus software that is set for decent scanning
will slow down "most" machines, check your hardware drivers and make sure
they are the correct one's, no yellow flag in device manager does'nt mean
everytings fine, I am still trying to find out why my system is loading ISA
bus drivers and legacy devices when I have no ISA bus , 2 PCI bus' and no
legacy devices and when I built this thing and loaded XP sp1a OEM it was
64bit and warned about NO 16bit support and haveing to run "wow.exe" for 32
bit support and now thats all gone and I cant get rid of it

Jerry,
No way would I run Norton ( or McAfee for that matter). Computers are just a
hobby for me but I have had so many friends get me to troubleshoot problems
on their computers with aps running slow. The very first thing I do is to
uninstall either of those two companies software and it has always solved
their problems of system sluggishness. Try disabling it and see if it solves
your problems. The only AV I use and recommend is Kaspersky Labs
(http://www.kaspersky.com/ ) and have never had any kind of problem with
it. I never even disable it for games as it has never caused any kind of
slowdown on my systems . I've been using it since Windows 95 was born and
it's never let me down. I also hear the NOD32 is a very good program but I
have no personal experience with it.
