Periodic high CPU usage

Monitoring the behaviour of msnmsgr.exe from Task Manager, it periodically
(every 4-8 seconds or so) takes 40-60% of my CPU resources for a few seconds.
The CPU Time for this process is higher than almost anything else, and the
performance graph shows a repeating wave shape, created by the Windows Live
Messenger application. This has the effect of slowing down every single other
application that I try to run, and makes the viewing of video especially
difficult.

This CPU resource hogging is really a problem because it creates annoying
delays in all other applications. Is there some particular feature of
messenger which is causing this that could be turned off? I am not using
video or audio, just text messaging.

I am running the Windows Live Messenger v. 8.0.0792.

I know what u are talking about Miika, i have the same problem with the
CPU..Also when i log on to the internet, Live messenger at times does not
connect or takes forever connecting .. At times i need to reboot for it to
come on.. Also when it does load up, Messenger freezes up and i have to wait
a minute or so for it to actually log on properly and that is when my CPU
#goes down to normal...What can i do about this ??
