Hello, I'm trying to help my friend update their Windows XP Home Edition
computer. When I go to Windows Update, I get the following error... (looks
like a javascript error on the Window Update page)...

Line: 37
Char: 2
Error: Permission denied
Code: 0
URL:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...age=0&ln=en-us

I've run this from Owner mode and Administrator mode and get the same result.

If anyone knows what I need to do, please help immediately!

Thanks!
Brian Z.

Check your firewall settings?

Chuck -

Yes, I checked the Firewall Settings... is there anything that I should
avoid? Should it be on? Or off? I don't think it's a firewall issue. I
re-installed Windows XP Home and then ran the first update, which it said
that I needed to download proper files so the new v5 of Windows Update would
work and ever since then I can't get into Windows Update.

Having this same problem on my XP myself.

I go to the Update site and immediately get the "Error on page" icon
with this same info. Sometimes it gets past the first screen and goes
to the "custom or express install" screen, but that's as far as I can
get. Clicking on the links does nothing, so it can't even check my
computer to see what updates I need.

I found an item on the MS Support site that seemed to address the
"permission denied" issue, but its solutions (registering a dll and
resetting internet settings to medium) did not work at all.

The last time I was able to access the Update site was when they did
the huge cumulative update release about a month ago. Only just
noticed my problem last week.

Has anyone figured out how to stop this Error: Permission denied when going
to windowsupdate???? (this is shown when clicking on "Error on page." message
on the Status Bar, and unable for windowsupdate to check for latest version
of software, install updates, or new installation history).

I have no firewall, no antivirus, everything under Internet Explorer options
"enabled" and under "low" security; and, yet, with IE6.0 SP1, i'm getting the
error like several people here.

Please, can you help us out?
thank you in advance.

I'd just add that I am experiencing the EXACT same problem. I am also unable
to install or even access updates for my McAffee security system. What is
awful frustrating is knowing that I have not successfully installed a Windows
Update in over a month. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. I've had this problem for a couple months now.
Every once in awhile automatic updates will turn on,but not very often.
Sometimes,it gets stuck at 0% and stays there for days. Sometimes it turns
off as soon as it pops up. I can't update from the website and even the few
times automatic update has popped up it doesn't ever say anything about sp2
and i have sp1 still. HELP!

Thanks Kalbo. It worked! The initial Windows Update page (where it
says that the site is checking to see if you have the latest software
to allow Windows Update to run) still shows a javascript error message
in the lower left corner of the browser (it said "Error on page"), but
I didn't have time to double-click it to look at it becaues Windows
Update went right ahead and took me to the next page where I get to see
Express Install, or Custom Install.

I have gotten to this point before, and like a previous poster said, I
would click on either of these two choices and nothing would happen. I
now clicked on Custom Install and it worked!

Thanks Kalbo.
