I have been following many threads, but whenever I try something I still get
the same message;
"You do not have permission to update Windows XP. Contact your system
administrator"
Having followed many threads and seen a lot from "MS MVP" I cannot get the
updates to work OR even System Restore. Obviously I am the System
Administrator. I can install new software, I can update Norton IS 2009, I can
do most things the administrator is supposed to do EXCEPT update windows!
Any takers ...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to installing Security Updates.

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

You may be missing a user right causing the message "You do not have
permission to update Windows XP. Contact your system
administrator" when you visit windowsupdate.

Start a command promt and run gpresult.exe (with no switches)
It should tell you what security groups you belong to. You MUST be a
member of the BUILTIN\Administators group.

Come to think of it, if the privileges granted to this group have been messed
with, couldn't that cause the same error? Does anyone know of any simple way
for a user to check what privileges are available?

Harry.
