Persistant WLM Crashes

I am suddenly encountering persistent WLM crashes. They seem to be
associated with switching from my ISP email account to my gmail account, as
best as I can determine. I would estimate that over the past 3-4 days this
has occurred maybe 1 out of every 3 times that I switched from my
Earthlink-provided email service to gmail.

I am running on Vista Home Premium and assume that my normal Windows Update
stuff also updates WLM. But (from what I can see) WLM has no 'About' option,
so I am not sure exactly what level WLM I am running. Vista is as up to do
as default MS update services create.

Thanks.

dave

From your NNTP posting headers:

| X-Newsreader: Microsoft Windows Live Mail 15.4.3538.513

WLM "About" is listed in the drop down menu invoked by clicking on the blue
page tab in the upper left corner, just to the left of the "Home" tab. I am
reasonably certain I have the latest version, and "About" is reporting the
same numeric version string as your headers are showing.

A bit more info ?

Define switching from isp to gmail account ?
- clicking on gmail folder (e.g. inbox) instead of switching from one
folder to another in your Earthlink account ?

- Gmail using Pop3 or IMAP ?

Windows Update (or Microsoft Update would be more accurate)does not update
WLM.
WLM is released as a component of Windows Live Essentials, only full
versions of the WL Essentials suite are released (update one, update them
all). The current 2011 version (15.4.3538.513), which you are using, is
the third release for 2011 (Initial release was the first, QFE1 the second
version, now QFE2 - where QFE = Quick Fix Engineering)

Thanks.

My GMAIL is IMAP and my ISP based email is POP3.

I am not sure about the property terminology here. But from my view I
have two separate access'es to two different email servers (each
with their own properties). I typically operate with my
pop.ix.netcom.com 'folder' open showing subfolders with
inbox, etc. Note that this is an ancient Earthlink domain.

My GMAIL folder is typically closed and I would click on
it to get to it (at which point WLM often, but not always,
crashes).

THanks.

One additional 'clue' here.

IIRC, every time WLM has crashed I was unable to restart
it without re-booting my system.

Sometimes a WLM process will be left running after a crash. While rebooting
the system will clear that hang, I believe running Task Manager will allow
you to find the hanging process, and stop it manually, which should allow yo
to restart WLM without the reboot.

Thanks - I'll take a look the next time I encounter a crash.

That would be very helpful.

Do you mean the Earthlink account folder is usually expanded and not
collapsed (the little triangle chevron next to it expands/collapses) while
the Gmail account is collapsed...thus fails when you expand it ?
- Does it occur if the both are expanded and you switch from a folder in
the Earthlink account to one in the Gmail account ?

If using IMAP for Gmail have you considered removing the account and
re-adding it ?

When was the last time WLM compacted its database ?

To force a compact
Open WLM in mail mode (do not access news, contacts, calendar, etc)
Set the compact counter to 1, select work offline, close WLM (via the blue
button - do not click the x in the upper right).
Don't interrupt the compaction
Open WLM, go online and retest.

If none of the above resolves your issue..consider posting your question in
the Windows Live Solution Center (windowslivehelp.com).

Thanks to all for the input. For whatever reason, the crashes have
stopped. I have been freely moving between email accounts in a
manner that (until today) would have generated regular
crashes - no problem today. This is clearly different behavior
from the last 3 days (where crashes were regular).

But I have good input for next steps if this re-occurs.
