Persistent Error in Automatic Update

For the last four days, I've had the dreaded window come up with regularity
saying that Automatic Updates has suffered a problem and needs to shut down
(like it's a mantra).

I found my way to stop the service from running, but now I can't get any
automatic updates.

If there a way to repair the file/files for Automatic Updates to get it to
work right again? Or will I have to go to the "download center".
