Personal Message Vanishes!!

Hi all,

I am having a bit strange problem with the setting of a personal message in
my Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.1.

I am using Windows XP Professional Edition with all the servce packs and
updates.

The problem
------------
I have installed Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.1 in my PC, everything works
correctly but once I log in to the messenger I can change/set a personal
message either using Tools -> Options -> Personal then enter the personal
message or by directly clicking just below of my display name where a default
display message say "Enter a personal message".

After setting the personal message it is visible throughout that session. In
other words if I set a new personal message and signout from the messenger
and signin then the personal message that I had set earlier is gone, just
vanished !!!.

I would like to know the following things:

(a) Why this is happening?

(b) Is this a problem of any incorrect messenger settings by me?

(c) Is this a problem due to any Windows XP setting (My OS)?

I hope a whole hearted cooperation from your guys/gals here.

Thanks in advance for your valuable help

Regards

Jayaprakash

That might be due to the new roaming feature.

Hi Jayaprakash,

I'm work on the Messenger team and I'm working on the roaming feature. I'll
try to answer your questions.

> > (a) Why this is happening?

garth is right, this is most likely related to the roaming feature. There
could be a couple of different things going on, so let me ask you a couple of
questions:

1. Does the same thing happen if you are changing your Display Picture or
Display Name?

2. If you sign into 8.1 Beta on another machine does the same thing happen?
It's possible that the machine that you are using is only able to set the
personal message locally on the client and not on the server.

3. Are you using a new account to sign into Messenger?

> > (b) Is this a problem of any incorrect messenger settings by me?

Probably not. The default setting is to use the roaming feature, but if you
turn it off then you should not be getting a blank personal message.

> > (c) Is this a problem due to any Windows XP setting (My OS)?

No.

Let me know the answers to the above questions and we'll try to figure out
what is going on.

I've been experiencing a similar problem since I installed 8 beta. I only
ever use one pc. My display picture is not affected but my display name and
personal message is often reset when I log in. Sometimes it stays put for a
few logins and sometimes it doesn't. I've had my account for many years. I'm
running Win XP.

Thanks & Kind Regards,
coco

message?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi coco,

Couple more questions. I'd like to find out what is going on here. First of
all, you're using 8.1 beta, correct? Which build number?

1. Do you change your Name and Personal Message often? If so, how often?
Once a day, once an hour, etc.?

2. Do you change only your name, or both at the same time?

3. How do you change the name or personal message? Do you always use the
same menus or dialog?

4. Do you change the picture often? Do you change the picture at the same
time as the name\personal message? If you change the picture often, do you
use your own pictures, or the default pictures included with Messenger? You
mention that the picture always works. No problems at all with the picture?

5. Do you have the connection log turned on? If so, can you save it and tell
me how big it is? The log is called MsnMsgr.txt and it can be found at
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Received
Files\MsnMsgr.txt. If you don't have it, you can enable logging by going to
Tools->Options->Connection->Advanced Settings->Save a log of my server
connections to help troublehsoot connection problems. The next time this
happens, can you send me the log? If it's really large you may need to
compress it before sending it. If you need some help with this let me know.

6. Are there other people that sign into Messenger on this machine?

7. Are you using any firewalls or anti-virus programs that may be blocking
Messenger?

Once you have the log, let me know and I'll post an address that you can
send it to. I'd really like to help solve your problem. Thanks for the
report!!!!

Hello Brian,

Build: 8.1.0106.00_ClientV8.1

1) No. My nickname is always the same and only sometimes (once a week if
that) do I set a personal message. Something else that may be relevant is
that my song information doesn't show up even though the settings have been
selected and I'm using Win MediaPlayer.
2) I hardly ever change my name/nickname and hardly ever change both at the
same time.
3) To change the name I go into the menu as always and to change the
personal message I type it straight in without going through the menus.
4) I have no problems with the picture at all. I don't change it
often...maybe once a month. Once again hardly change my name and hardly ever
name/personal message and picture at the same time. I always use my own
pictures.
5) I've just turned on my connection log, so I can send it to you next time
it happens.
6) Not very often but yeah sometimes other people do sign on using this
machine.
7) yes, I have Norton running. If I have emails and attempt to click through
from messenger, Hotmail will ask me to type in my u/s & p/w but the page will
not be displayed even if I refresh...the only way it will work is if I
disable norton for 5mins. When Norton tries to reconnect after 5mins, it will
sign WLM out! However if I open up an Explorer window myself and type in
www.hotmail.com and try to log on, it will login with no problems at all!

Recent: I've logged on several times in the last couple of days and my
nickname has remained and not been reset. I used a personal message last
night and removed it before logging off. I just tested the song title issue
but it doesn't work...doesn't show up on my machine and my friends can't see
it either.

Thanks, hope this info helps

Thanks coco!

This does help. When you get the connection log after the error, please send
it to testor @ live.com.

One more question that I have - do you have either the "Remember me" or
"Remember my password" setting checked on the login screen?

Thanks again!
