Personal Settings will not save - any ideas???

Hi all,
Recently, I was fortunate to receive a very cool Dell Inspiron laptop for
my birthday. It came pre-loaded with Vista, which I also though was neat.
Here's the problem:
My personal settings are saved and re-used sporadically, to put it
nicely.
Examples:
Configured Start menu to display Power Down instead of Sleep, and it
stayed that way for a few days before reverting back to the old setting.
Screen saver will not run - screen just shuts off instead, and yes, I
have made sure that those options are different. I like my SS to turn on
after 10 minutes of non-use, and the screen to shut off after 20
mins...however as soon as 10 mins go by, the screen just turns off. Very
irritating!
The last issue is that Yahoo IM periodically disconnects - I think this
is just a compatability issue, has this happened to anyone else?
As small as these functionality issues are, they are giving my
narrow-minded pro-Mac friends ammunition for their 'Macs are better' BS, so
any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance!
See you in the Rumble Pit!

There is an advance setting button in the Power settings dialog. When open
and changes made this has an Apply button. It may help solve the reverting.

Yahoo have a new Vista IM. Suggest you go for it.

Tell your Mac friends to stick to what they like and you will play on with
your new toy.
