Any way to have windows live mail desktop stop disabling the resize
capabilities of windows live photo gallery?

I've recently tried switching over from Picassa / Gmail to Windows Live
Photo Gallery / Windows Live Mail however once I make windows live mail the
default mail program it stops asking me to resize my photos when trying to
email from photo gallery. Signing into windows live mail does not solve this
as it does some photograph upload to windows live which is not what I want. I
simply want a regular photo attachment.

I have installed another email client and proved that this is not an issue.
Only an issue with windows live mail desktop.

So is my only option to use another email client? or is there a way to get
windows live mail to stop disabling the resize behaviour of windows live
photo gallery?

Hi, dmombour.

The word "desktop" was removed from the name of Windows Live Mail nearly 4
years ago, while WLM was still in beta. Whenever we see someone post with
that name, we can't help but wonder if they are using the current version of
WLM. And, since you posted via the Web interface, not with WLM, we can't
tell from the headers on your message which build you might have.

Could you please click Help | About Windows Live Mail and confirm that you
are running build 14.0.8089.0726. If not, you can go to
http://download.live.com and the the current version of all the Windows Live
Essentials, including the current Windows Live Photo Gallery.

In any case, I have never been able to get the hang of downsizing my 1 MB
photos to a more comfy size (100 KB?) to attach to my emails, so I'll be
following this thread for some clues for myself.

Sounds like you want the opposite of what the OP is looking for?
You like the prompt and want it to work for you?
OP doesn't like the prompt and wants it gone?

FWIW the only place I remember seeing a prompt like that is
when doing a right-click Send Picture by E-mail from IE to OE
which may be similar to what the OP is trying to do from WLPG.
Does that one work for you?

R. C. White,

Strange comment about this newsgroup's name since it's the only English one
available serving users of WLM.

Even when one clicks on Help and searches for newsgroups...there it is again.

You may want to recommend a name change to Microsoft.

Hi, David.

> You may want to recommend a name change to Microsoft.

I have. MANY of us have!

But the WLM Team explains that it is not so simple to change the name of a
Usenet newsgroup. They could have created a new NG, but they didn't want to
lose the still-useful history that had already accumulated in this NG. (Of
course, if they had changed it then, we would have plenty of new context
built up by now.)

The very nature of Usenet means that these newsgroups are "mirrored" by
thousands of other news servers around the world. Even if all of the
traffic on this Microsoft public news server migrated to a new NG, the old
one would not die so long as users on those other servers continued posting
to it. That means that responses would be fragmented between the two
groups. Whether that would create more confusion than the outdated name is
a question that will never be answered, I suppose. For now, all we can do
is explain the NG name and TRY to stop users (mostly WLM newbies) from
continuing to refer to "WLMD".

I read the op's post that he wanted to retain the WLPG resize prompt, avoid Photo Mail not automatically being chosen when using
the WLPG email button *and* just attach the picture...all three when WLM is the default email client. RC wanted to just resize a
pic down to 100kb for sending in mail(not specifying if WLPG was in use).

For RC if using WLPG as the picture source and the email hot button..
- To do so with WLPG and WLM set as default email client, any resizing has to be done prior to clicking the WLPG email button.
Doing so will save the picture with a new filename.

If WLPG is installed and WLM is not the default email client(e.g. Outlook is), then the WLPG option to resize is available before
clicking the email button or when clicking the email button.

WLPG does not permit one to choose the size of the resized picture, only the resolution(see attached)...though choosing 640x480
will resize a 1.6MB jpg pic(originally at 2048x1536) down to about 116kb.

For the OP
If one wishes to override the Photo E-mail option in WLM when using the WLPG email hot-button, the 'Upload Larger images' option in
WLM must be disabled....doing so will attach the picture to an email in its original size. (Note: Catch 22...the ability to access
the Upload larger images option is only available if signed on to Windows Live)

If WLM is configured as the default email client then Windows Live Photo Gallery's(WLPG) dialog box to select a size(smaller,
small, medium, large, original size) is overridden and not available.
WLPG dialog box --> http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=nmkz9j&s=6

Additionally the presence of WLM(set as default) and WLMPG when using the WLPG email hot-button will interpret the request to send
Photo E-mail(i.e. uploading to the server) which has the option(to upload up to a 5MB file in original size). If signed on to
Windows Live one has the option to select the file upload resolution size range(low, med, high[512kb, 1MB, and up to 5MB in
original size]) provided the WLM option to 'Upload Larger Images' is enabled on WLM's Tools/Options/Send tab. The 'Upload Larger
images' option ***is only available*** when signed on to Windows Live.

If one wishes to override the Photo E-mail option in WLM when using the WLPG email hot-button, the 'Upload Larger images' option in
WLM must be disabled....doing so will attach the picture to an email in its original size.
- Optionally if not sending the original size, if you wish to send the picture/photo as a 'resized from the original' when WLM is
the default email client and WLPG is installed, then resize the picture to the desired size in advance, disable the 'upload larger
image' option so the picture can be attached.

If you wish to retain WLPG's 'Attach files' resize option another email client is necessary(e.g. Outlook or third party).

FYI...WLPG can resize and save the picture to one of the following formats
-640x480
-800x600
-1024x728
-1280x1024
Note: A resize and save will not replace the original photo, but will save the file with the same name and append a suffix to
thefilename(e.g. (640x480).

@R.C.
As an example on resizing in WLPG....a picture(*.jpg) that I have and taken on a digital camera with dimensions/resolution of 2048
x 1536 with a file size of 1.56MB when resized to 640x480 in WLPG yields a 116KB file(close to 100).

Agreed. I missed the double negative "stop disabling"
and was probably more influenced by the final sentence:
"I simply want a regular photo attachment."--What's that mean?
I am sure I saw it as more like: "I want a regular attachment
(of a photo)."

Another double negative? <eg>

> the WLPG email button *and* just attach the picture

I think some a numbered list may have been in order here.
E.g. I am now reading your explanation as:

You thought OP wanted:
1. to retain the WLPG resize prompt
2. have "Photo Mail" (unclear concept IMO) chosen
when using the WLPG E-mail button
3. just attach the picture

#3 obviously means "just attach the (potentially) modified picture"
which I now suppose is an interpretation of "regular photo attachment"?

I think your explanation will probably be a useful guide
for doing some testing but without that testing
and without previous experience using these
features I am still unclear what the problem is...

That much seemed clear. ; )

That sounds awkward.

Outlook being more than a simple MAPI client perhaps?

So similar functionality available with a different UI?

Thanks for the info, Winston. I think I'm getting a glimmer
now of what the issues are.

Almost..
1. retain WLPG prompt
**2. Photo e-Mail not the default email message type when clicking WLPG email button when WLM is default email client
3. Just attach the picture

The above permits the op to resize(if desired) in WLPG prior to opening an email message window and still attach..(i.e. The same
way it would work in Outlook, OE, WM)

Despite your explanation I just don't get this hang-up on references to WLMD
.. . . . .

Maybe folks should stop assuming that a reference to WLMD means the user is
on a much older version of the application. Since most newer PC's are W7
and shipped without email programs (requiring a "current" WLMail download)
or shipped with WLMail preinstalled, it is safe to assume their version is
at least a version newer than what was originally actually known as WLMD
(wasn't that just the beta?). And, even older-OS users are just now
downloading "current" WL applications (current) due to the publicity (no
email in W7 - preparation for eventual OS upgrade). Point being, majority
of WLMail users have a newer version.

I believe most references to WLMD are indicative of the fact that the
version in question is the "Desktop Installed Version" of WLMail, as opposed
to the web-based "Windows Live Hotmail" (which has prompted MUCH MORE
confusion). WLMD vs. WLM is much less offensive than the WLMail vs. Windows
Live Hotmail debacle - too many references to Windows Live; and, which is
generally not applicable to the WLMail application because it is only "live"
by virtue of the login. WLMail by itself is no more "live" than OE or WM.
And, as the op mentioned, it is called Windows Live Mail Desktop in the
newsgroup title.

If needed, just ask the op's for their version number. Seems like the
ongoing "WLMD" discussion is just contributing to global warming . . . all
that hot air !
