I have a new Dell 420 machine with 8 GB of RAM, and a ATI HD3650 512M
graphics adapter. It came preinstalled with Vista 32. I own a copy o
Vista Home Premium 64 so I upgraded it. I noticed that the cool lookin
"Photo Screen Saver" with transitions and backgrounds disappeared fro
the options after upgrading to Vista 64. What's up with that

Hi, tahoekid.

Is this a retail copy? Or an OEM version?

HOW did you "upgrade" it?

Any change from 32-bit to 64-bit (or vice versa) requires a clean install,
not an upgrade. During the clean install, all the 32-bit drivers get wiped
out; 64-bit drivers then get installed. It's quite possible that there are
no 64-bit drivers for your hardware on the 64-bit DVD - especially if it is
not a disc customized for YOUR model by Dell. A generic "system builder"
OEM disc probably would not have the special drivers you need.

Have you asked Dell about this? Have you visited the ATI website to find
64-bit drivers there?

I have an MSDN developer account, so it is the full-blown version
It was a clean install of Vista 64, the only one you can do when goin
from 32-bit to 64-bit. (Unfortunately it won't re-use an existing 32-bi
registry

Anyway, I figured out and fixed it. When installing the OS, it uses th
generic adapter driver that it has on disk, and does the benchmarkin
with that driver, and stores the result. When I upgraded the drive
after installing the OS (ATI Catalyst Control Center and driver), it di
not re-run the test. I'm not sure where the responsibility lies there
is the OS supposed to realize a new driver has been installed or doe
the user have to manually preform the test.... anyway, I forced it t
rerun the test and it reset to the correct value (from 1.0 to somethin
like 5.7)
I was not even aware such a 'test' existed prior to poking around i
here. I read where Windows 7 is fixing some of those issues.
Anyway, all is well in Vista 64 land.....

Hi, tahoekid.

Glad you got it sorted out. Thanks for the feedback.

The WEI (Windows Experience Index) is an interesting toy (sort of like
Norton's Speed Test of a couple decades ago), but is only a guideline that
we shouldn't put too much stock in. Mine recently dropped from 4.6
(Graphics was the lowest) to 2.9 (for the Primary hard disk), when the only
change I made was to put back the 2 GB RAM to replace the sticks that were
RMAed. Processor and RAM get 5.8 and 5.9. I'm not a gamer or videophile so
I'm happy with my ATI Radeon X1600 Pro, using the MS-supplied drivers in the
Win7 Ultimate x64 beta.

I do wonder about my low HD score, but not enough to check it out. I have 4
SATA 2 HDs: 200 GB, 1 TB, and a pair of 300 GB in a RAID 1 mirror; I
usually boot from the 200 and keep Win7 on the TB disk.

Windows runs the WEI when first installed, and then again when we click on
it an Re-run the assessment.
