Seeking your advice. I've never used a backup program, but now that I've
updated from windows98 to vista, I think it's time to do so.

Which image backup program would you choose between Acronis True Image and
Shadow Protect Desktop 3.1.

My hard drive has a capacity of 326 GB, but I'm only using 22 GB and doubt
that will grow very much larger.

Not being at all familiar with external hard drives, would you please
recommend one that is easy to operate.

Disregard cost in all of the above.

Thank you, Anne

Excellent choice. And it can be had for under $30 at newegg.com with
free shipping.

Casper is NOT an imaging program. It is only a cloning program.

Haven't used Ghost in years. I dumped it in favor of Acronis True
Image about 4 years ago.

No need to ping me. You got great answers already. What they said. I like
Acronis True Image and I usually buy Western Digital My Books.

I'm not Malke, but although you've already gotten some good answers
I'll add a couple of comments:

1. I have no experience with Shadow Protect Desktop 3.1, so I can't
compare the two, but I've used and highly recommend Acronis True
Image.

2. An external hard drive is nothing but a regular IDE hard drive in a
USB enclosure. From the standpoint of "easy to operate" they are all
identical, since there is nothing to operate; you simply plug the
power cord into an outlet and the USB cord into a USB port on your
computer.

You can buy an external USB drive, or you can buy an IDE drive and a
USB enclosure and mount the drive in the enclosure yourself. Mounting
the drive in the enclosure is extremely easy, and even someone who is
all thumbs can do it in well under five minutes.

3. If you're new to backing up, you might be interested in reading

They are not even close to identical. External drives don't have to be
IDE. Newer externals may support the newer SATA-1 or SATA-2 standard.
They all don't use USB either. Many externals support Firewire and
SATA in additional to USB.

One caution about ANY external drive that uses an external power
supply and most do. NEVER simply shut them off once in use. This can
corrupt data on the drive or in a worse case totally kill the drive.
You need to "unmount" the drive by clicking on the safely remove
option on the task bar. This will make sure the drive isn't reading or
writing (in use) PRIOR to turning off the external drive.

While claimed to be "portable" some external drives, both pre built
and those you put your own drive in might have very flimsy connectors
where the data cable is. Constantly pulling on this connector can also
damage the tiny circuit card it is connected to internally giving the
false impression the drive itself has "died" if it gets damaged when
in fact only the connector or circuit card has been damaged. If you
move these around a lot treat them gently when adding/removing the
connectors.
