I heard windows 7 comes with WMP 12 which can play AAC file.

Without upgrading to windows 7, is there a way to play AAC file in windows
media player in vista?

There is some excellent work on this subject by John Lookwood.

Thanks.
I also found that after installing zune software (no need to have the actual
player), WMP can play m4a. But I can't drag and drop the file. I have to
explicitly open the file. Apparently, even though it can play the file, the
UI doesn't know it.

To have drag and drop work, I believe you'd need to have full library
registration, which Zune as an indepedent client would not add to the
player. Other M4A plugins designed to work with the player should actually
do that type of registration.

See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.

WMP Tag Plus is one of these plug-ins:
http://bmproductions.fixnum.org/wmptagplus

It will allow you to drag and drop AAC/M4A files to the WMP library, and
let WMP recognize/write metadata in these files.

Regards
