Hello

I have a PC which has XP installed and a new desktop with Visa Home Premium
installed. I have put some of my Word files on to the laptop from the PC but
it cant read them.

Please can you tell me if there is a way to get my laptop to read my PC
files once I have transferred them or do I have to get XP installed on to my
laptop?

Thanking you in advance.

Hi Jo,

You would need to have Office Word installed on Vista as well to see
them normally. WordPad does not read these type of files.

You can also use the free program TextMaker to view your Word documents
in Vista if you do not a Office Word to install on it.

'TextMaker Viewer 2008 - Free document viewer for .doc, .odt, .tmd,
..rtf, and more' (http://www.officeviewers.com/)

Do you have a Word compatible program or a Word reader on your Vista
machine?

Ideally, your new machine should also have Microsoft Word installed
however Wordpad should be able to read them.

If you want some free software, try Open Office

Hello Philo

Thank you for your reply. I tried to open them using Wordpad but it was not
the proper document, it was just lots of characters with no rhyme or reason
(not to me anyway!!!).

First, is MS Word or some other program that can read Word files
installed on the laptop? You can buy Word or download the free Word
viewer from Microsoft
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en),
but that won't let you update the files, only see them. You can also
download Open Office (www.openoffice.com), a free, open-source office
suite that will read and write Office files.

The other possibility is that you have Word 2007 on your PC and an
earlier version on the laptop. In this case, you'll have to either
tell Word on the PC to save in the earlier format (check the file type
dropdown in the Save As box), or download a compatibility pack for the
laptop (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...444731033.aspx)

You're welcome jo.

The fact that you cannot open the files is a very strong indication you do
not have the needed program. I suggest the open source (free) office suite.

In Windows Vista, support for Wordpad reading Word files was removed because
of incorrect rendering and formatting problems.

I suspect the Vista laptop may have Word 2007, saving files as *.docx, that
earlier Word on the XP can't read.

On the laptop, save the files as *.doc, and the XP Word 2003 (???) should be
able to read them.
