HI there,

i was copying some file and folders to my other hard drive and by mistake I
deleted all my documents!!!, and now i do not have any thing in my document
folder.

I restored my system but i didn't get them back .

Is there any chance of getting them back ???

Hello youngpowr,
Forgot about the recycle bin? Right click on the recycle bin, click
OPEN. Are the files still there? Look to the top, click Restore All
Items.
Oh no, you did a system restore. Hope the recycle bin still holds your
files.

Did you look in the Recycle Bin? That's where "deleted" files go. They
should still be there unless you emptied the Recycle Bin or you're
using some third party delete utility that may bypass or in some way
change how the Recycle Bin functions.

If you truly copied files to another hard drive and the copies are
still there you can of course copy them back from whence they came.

You goofed in doing a system restore. If you used Windows Explorer to
delete files AND you realized you didn't want to, right away all you
had to do to restore things was hit Edit then pick undo delete.

There are several ways to get back files that were deleted because
surprise files are NEVER deleted, they simply have the sectors they
were originally stored on overwritten. When or if that happens is
totally beyond human intervention. You're at the mercy of Windows if
and when that happened. If you have a big hard drive and lots of free
space on it, then the sectors most likely haven't been overwritten.

Hello,
I'm afarid I can't help you. I had read something about retreiving data
from the harddrive when they were accidentally deleted. But I do know
one thing : don't write anything on the harddrive untill someone comes
along with a solution. Good luck.

You are quite right. The only way to get those files back now is with data
retrieval software or by restoring them from backup. See below:

*IMPORTANT* - It may be possible to retrieve the data by software methods.
DO NOTHING FURTHER ON THE DRIVE. The data is still on the hard drive but if
you overwrite it, it will be extremely difficult or impossible to recover
it. If you use data recovery software, install it on another machine and
either use it from that operating system or create a bootable cd/floppy and
work with that. If you don't have the skill and/or equipment to do these
procedures and the data is crucial, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop that has experience in doing data recovery. This will
not be your local version of BigStoreUSA. In-shop data recovery is usually
not exactly cheap (for ex., my charges are generally $150-350USD), but it
normally costs less than sending the drive to a professional data recovery
company like Drive Savers. You need to make the determination of the value
of your data and decide what to do.

If you don't have the skill and you don't have a local computer repair shop
that has data recovery skills and if the data is crucial - send the drive
to Drive Savers (or another data recovery company). It will be extremely
expensive, starting at around $500 and going up to around $3,000 but only
you know the value of your data.

Here are some links to various data retrieval programs. I use Easy Recovery
Pro, but it is expensive. People whom I respect have recommended R-Studio
and Restoration. YMMV.

Whether or not you ever get your data back, the first thing to do is buy at
least 2 USB drives (or a SATA/ATA cable adapter and some slightly obsolete
hard drives at 40 euros/dollars a go).

For backing up, SyncToy 2.0 seems OK now with Vista: it's free.

Run this - obsessively - every time you save any important data. Use the
'contribute' option, not 'synchronise' or 'echo'. That way, if you goof,
rename or move files, the worst that can happen is that you get multiple
copies on your backup, and possibly have to retrieve stuff from the
wastepaper basket or whatever it's called.

You can also use cds or dvds, but don't rely on them, specially if your
drive came with a Dell and you have no control over the write speed. Anyway,
you'll need several DVDs if you have a reasonable collection of photos or
movies, and things get complicated.

Remember that even if you don't goof, hard disks have a tendency to go phut
without warning, just like the filament of a light bulb ...it was working
OK 10 minutes ago...

Regards
