Hey friends,I do understand that this is not the category in which I'am
supposed to post such threads, but since this section/community is very
active and consists of many professionals I thought of posting it here.I
posted a thread in the other section meant for virus but unfortunately
did not receive any kind of help or reply. So if possible I would like
any of the professionals to help me with my problem.

My problem is as follows:

I downloaded a video through utorrents, when I tried to play it through
'Windows Media Player' it was'nt able to play it and a dialogue box
appeared asking me to download a codec which was necessary to play that
video.Since the dialogue box appeared through 'Windows Media Player' and
due to my ignorance,I thought it was authorized and downloaded the
codec.

After downloading the codec the video still did not play and another
dialogue box of 'Microsoft Windows' appeared saying : ms32.info not
working. So i shut down my laptop and turned it on again. It started as
normal, but after loading all the icons etc my antivirus(Avast Antivirus
Professional 4.8) detected many viruses,trojans and worms.Avast
Antivirus then recommended that i perform the action : move to chest.I
then performed the action but the access was denied by Avast.Hence I had
to keep deleting the viruses, worms etc.

So i decided to perform the 'local hard drives' scan by Avast Antivirus
and I also scanned the drives in which the viruses were found. The
virus, worm or trojan affects files in my 'Temporary Internet Files'
folder and hence the files keep getting infected the more I use the
internet(according to my observations).

The problem is even though I perform all kinds of scans through Avast
Antivirus Professional 4.8,it does detect the viruses etc,I'am able to
delete them as well, but evertime I start my laptop I receive a dialogue
box from 'Microsoft Windows' saying that 'Windows Explorer is not
working' , 'Windows Explorer is restarting' and then Avast Warning
appears with the following malware:

1)Malware name: Win32:Tiny-II [Trj]
Malware type: Trojan Horse
VPS version: 090716-0

2)Malware name: Win32:Vitro
Malware type: Virus/Worm
VPS version: 090716-0

3)Malware name: Win32:Alureon [CD] [Rkt]
Malware type: Rootkit
VPS version:090716-0

The following are the details of my laptop:

Windows Vista Home Basic
Copyright 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

System:

Processor: Inter(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU T2600 @ 2.16Ghz
Memory(RAM): 2.00GB
System type: 32-bit Operating System.

Antivirus:Avast Antivirus Professional 4.8

If anyone could please help me on how do I completely get rid of the
virus/trojan/worm I would greatly appreciate it.
Also,my 'Data Exectution Prevention' settings are set to 'Turn on DEP
for essential Windows programs and services only'.Please please help
me.

Thank you!

Try running MalwareBytes:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Download the free version, boot into safe mode and run it from there.
Run it several times until it reports no further infection.

The classic mistake made by millions. There's no reason one should have to
download a codec to play a p^awrn video. In the less likely event a
specialized codec is necessary, one should look carefully at the source of
the content and of the codec.

Windows is very convenient, compliant and complicit. For the most part it
will do exactly what you tell it to do, whether it is good for you or not.
With UAC some progress is made against malware .. but if you give you're OK,
the malware will run. Once run it can quickly hose your system to the point
where a zero-fill / repartition / reformat / reinstall is the only sure
option.

NOW, regarding the computer's repair. There's malwarebytes.org blah blah and
all that .. but even the virus removal scene is filled with pitfalls and
scams and people demanding money and even more viruses hidden in the
"solutions".

To be honest with you, I think system imaging (which will be available
built-in to all the Basic / Home / Business / and Ultimate versions of
Windows 7) is the better option these days.

Clean install Windows and programs, enter all the Product Keys and activate
everything that demands it. Configure everything, including email. Then make
a whole system backup image to a USB harddrive, or DVD-R.

Then over time, occasionally back up documents, pictures, music and data to
a USB flash drive, USB harddrive, network location or DVD-R etc. etc.

Should a virus hit, then simply run the whole system image back onto the
computer making it like new. Restore the docs etc. back from the USB
harddrive or USB flash drive or network location. So, instead of taking
days .. and expense .. and worry .. and doubt .. .. it all takes about an
hour - and no sweat - to get back up and running.

Interesting. There was a long thread earlier with a bunch of Avast fanboys
bashing McAfee as if Avast is the best AV since sliced bread, but you say
Avast didn't stop you from downloading or executing a trojan, only detecting
it after it's too late...
If your AV won't fix it for you, you either need a new AV tool or you need
to completely reinstall stuff.

Have you tried System Restore?

The simplest way to prevent all viruses from messing up your PC to the point
where you have to reinstall an OS and redo all your apps is to keep regular
backups. A typical laptop these days comes with up to 320GB of hard drive.
A spare external 1TB USB hard drive costs under $100. For that you could
make 3 partitions and store up to 3 backups at a time. If you run an AV
check before a backup and it finds something drastic like this you can wipe
your system and restore a backup instead.

Go look for a Linux group. This is a Vista group. If they wanted to run
Linux they wouldn't be here. You don't tell someone when their Ford has
issues to fix them by replacing it with a Buick. You're not helpful at all,
and Linux could have virus problems just as well as any MS OS. If no Linux
PC ever gets a virus, it's likely because not enough people are using
viruses so virus writers don't bother with them. It's the same reason MACs
rarely get viruses. They are getting more recently as they've gained some
popularity. If you could convince everyone to switch to Linux (highly
unlikely), you'd be getting far more viruses. If you like Linux, maybe you
should keep your mouth (keyboard) shut.

What a crock of ****. NOBODY wants to run that CRIPPLED OS they call
Ubuntu. Remember, Ubuntu was written by geeks for geeks who can't get
laid. If you want to waste your time sitting in front of your computer
with your thumb up your ass, then Ubuntu is for you.

For the rest of the population that needs to get work done, they want an
OS they can USE. Windows solves that problem.

Hmmm, seems I pushed one of Mike's little buttons. If you run Linux, you
STILL don't have to worry about this crap.

Make me, little boy.

The sign on the door says Vista.GENERAL which means alternatives to
Vista are on topic, sonny.

Most haven't heard of Linux or believe the FUD that Bill Yanaire, et al
spew.

We aren't talking about hardware, dumb ****.

False.

False.

You obviously don't know much about Linux architecture. Get back to me
when you've educated yourself.
