Hi all
I wanted to install all the latest updates on my Windows Server
Foundation 2008 R2 x64 box this morning and so I ran the Windows
Update tool.
It started downloading variaous updates but then the progress bar
didn't move for 15 minutes so I ended up cancelling and restarting
anyway. Looking at the update history the following update failed:
Security Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB2385678)
So now, having rebooted, when I check for updates again it just sits
there checking for updates with the progress bar going from left to
right and back again endlessly.
Also, since the reboot I can no longer connect to the server using
Remote Desktop.
And something I'd noticed a few weeks ago, but had not done anything
about it (I'm no server expert!), was the fact that in the Server
Manager I can't see what Roles and Features are installed - it says
there was an error refreshing roles and features:
"Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager. The remote procedure call
failed. (Exception from HRESULT 0x800706BE)"
I did some googling and came across this post:
"Server Manager 2008 could not discover state of system"
(
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...servermanager/
thread/7216345c-fc73-4bc1-9b54-dcfe224ba59e)
and so I downloaded and tried to run the "System Update Readiness
Tool" as recommended. However when I ran the installer the dialog box
"Windows Update Standalone Installer" is just continually "Searching
for updates on this computer..." Pressing the Cancel button on the
dialog box doesn't close the dialog box.
I've seen this message in the System Event log a few times:
"The Windows Modules Installer service terminated unexpectedly. It
has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be
taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service."
I did manually restart the service.
I'd appreciate any help in getting:
a) Windows Update working again
b) Remote Desktop working again
c) Roles and Features working again in Server Manager
Many thanks, and apologies for such a long post.
Tim
