I am looking for good firewall for Win 98SE and WinME.

My machine runs WinXP, I use ADSL to connect to the Net, and I use
WinXP's built-in firewall when I'm online.

My friends have their machines online via ADSL too, but their machines
don't have WinXP. One is Win 98SE, another one is Win ME.

During the weekend, I scan both their machines for virus, using Norton
AntiVirus 2003 professional, and you know what I found ?

On the Win 98SE machine, there were 793 files infected with virus, 3
of them could NOT be fixed.

On the Win ME machine, ther were 638 files infected with virus, 2 of
them couldn't be fixed.

I regularly scan my machine, and from time to time, I found one or two
viruses, perhaps it's because of the firewall. On my friends' machines
however, there are no firewalls.

So my question is - if I want to set up firewall for them, what are
the choices ?

Are there any good and free firewall available for Win 98SE and WinME
?

The machine used by my friends are older machines, and one requirement
for the firewall, if they are used, is that they don't slow down the
machine too much.

Do you have any recommendation ?

Many thanks !!

One of them would be "Sygate".

Penang,
A firewall's purpose is to to block, or filter, certain types of network
traffic from reaching your computer. To prevent the viral infections, your
friends need a good antivirus, kept up-to-date with the latest virus
definitions AND the firewall to prevent unwanted traffic, both incoming and
outgoing.
Microsoft is offering the EZtrust combination AV, cookie control and
firewall for free ($49.95 value, purported). You can have the package for 1
year before having to renew your subscription for $9.95. If interested,
check it out at:

Heirloom, old and killed the Norton

They don't need a firewall as bad as they must need a good up-to-date
antivirus program.
Grisoft make a very good free antivirus program for older windows called AVG
6 Free www.grisoft.com
You can also get a free firewall from www.zonelabs.com called zone alarm.

Almost forgot to add this:
http://www.maltanet.net/pages/help_d...s/firewall.htm
You may want to read up on firewalls.....the above sight gives some pretty
good info and a Google search will put you in touch with a variety of apps.
Webster's recommendation of Sygate is good, as is Zone Alarm, Tiny Firewall
and others. Many of them are free apps. AVG by Grisoft makes a great free
antivirus.
Heirloom, old and had to add it

Zone Alarm is an easy to configure and adequate firewall. However viruses
are often caused by not keeping current with Critical Updates at Windows
Updates, and not using a antivirus program that keeps itself updated and
also scans ALL emails. Email attachments are a huge source of viruses and
worms. See the link below from Microsoft on three easy steps needed to
protect a computer from the internet. If using W2K or XP I also suggest
using hard to guess passwords for user accounts - at least any
administrator accounts. --- Steve
