Greetings,
Several versions of Messenger, including Windows Live Messenger have had 'Add-In' support,
although with the exception of the Windows Messenger one (now discontinued), it hasn't been
officially supported (read as: beta hidden feature).
Messenger has also had an API you can take advantage of, although there is no present
documentation.
So yes, you can expect more of this in the future.
