does anyone know if there are plans to provide plug-in capabilities into
messenger, so people could add in support for other chat clients, automated
messaging etc. ?

If not do you know the reasons that they will not be providing plug-in
support?

Greetings,

Several versions of Messenger, including Windows Live Messenger have had 'Add-In' support,
although with the exception of the Windows Messenger one (now discontinued), it hasn't been
officially supported (read as: beta hidden feature).

Messenger has also had an API you can take advantage of, although there is no present
documentation.

So yes, you can expect more of this in the future.
