Hi! This is my very first post here and i must say, this place is great
Very lively and everyone seems really friendly. Normally, i don't pos
on these kinds of boards (i'm not very computer savy sadly), but i hav
a problem and i was hoping i could find some help here

First off, i'm running good ol' bottem of the barrel Vista Basic

My problem involves PNG picture files

As you may or may not know, there was a widespred epidemic of peopl
not able to view PNG files while running Vista or, in some cases, XP
Sadly, i am among these people. But my case is a little different

I can view PNG files in IE7 online at a site. I'm able to look at PN
pictures this way just fine. Problem is, i can't see ANY of them that
have on my computer. They won't work in any program, not even if i ope
the file with IE7. It doesn't even matter if i save the picture i see o
the website. I right click "Save picture as", type in a name, and clic
save. But when i go into Windows Photo Gallery to see it, it's just
blank space with the name i gave it

Funny thing is, if i put that same file onto a memory stick an
transfer it to my old PC that runs WindowsME, it shows up fine in ever
program

After finally getting fed up with this, i did searches on the problem
I was not the only one. There were many who had the same problem
looking for answers

Some solution's were given. I tried all of them. They all failed. Eve
the last ditch effort of turning my UAC off and it changed nothing. So
looked for more solution's, but couldn't find any more

It seems that after August 2007, all discussion of this problem stops
But no real solution was ever found. Well, i couldn't find it anyway

So i was hoping, since it has been a year (people started asking fo
help back in Feb 07), maybe a solution has been found? Or is it still
mystery that Microsoft won't acknowledge

If you've come this far, thank you for your time. All replys will b
appreciated. :

USUALLY IT IS A MATTER OF HAVING A GRAPHICS PROGRAM THAT WILL READ THEM AND
MAKING THE ASSOCIATION.
I HAVEN'T RESEArched it, but i haven't had the problem.

IrfanView. View PNGs and most other common formats. Or convert them to
another graphics file type, individually or in batches.

What happened before this occured? What other software is installed or was
installed to this system?

Does going through the Default Programs tool and using that to reassociate
PNGs with Photo Gallery fix up the PNG side of this issue?

Well i was able to find a quick fix.

On a whim, i downloaded Firefox to see how it would handle PNGs. To my
surprise, it's able to view and save them perfectly! Even Windows Photo
Gallery and other programs can see them when i save with Firefox.

So there ya go. For every situation there may be different quick
solution's. Mine is Firefox.

As for what caused this in the first place, i believe it has something
to do with Quicktime. Alot of people have said that their problems began
after they downloaded QT. It may not be the case for everyone, but i
think it was for me.

Oh well, until Microsoft releases a proper update i'll do just fine
with Firefox. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Did you try:
===
Does going through the Default Programs tool and using that to reassociate

===
? If you did have the "QuickTime" issue, that was shown in initial testing
to fix this up.

Since it's a setting that QuickTime would be making, it would probably be
inappropriate for MS to change their settings. Apple would be more likely
to make the proper fix for this, if that's what you're encountering.
