Pocket Word documents formatting problem during sync

Hi.
I have discovered that text in a newly created Pocket Word document cannot
be searched-for when the document is synchronised to my host desktop PC. I
need to use the text search facility of Windows to find text strings in
documents. My investigations show that if you look at the Pocket Word
document in notepad, you will see that the RTF codes are there, but the
actual text is in HEX rather than Ascii. If I then amend and save the
document in, say Word, then the document format changes, and the text is
searchable again. The document also becomes readable in Notepad once again.
Is anyone aware of a bug report or a workaround for this please?

Hi,
The default for Pocket Word synchronization is to convert them to Word
documents. Did you disable this?

A good workaround is to enable conversion in ActiveSync on your desktop -
Tools - Options or save the files in Word format on your Pocket PC.

Hi Chris
Thanks for your input. However, I feel that this problem is caused by a bug
in the converter DLL's.To make sure, I did play around with the
Options|Rules|Conversion Settings as you suggested but they all turned up the
same results. The Windows search on the desktop PC even finds the HEX
strings, so it's definitely a problem Microsoft haven't publicised a fix for
(yet?). Are they even aware of it? I just hope that someone from MS views
this and will schedule a fix ;-).

Hi Randy,
As for the converter being fixed, it may take a long time before it gets
addressed. Normally there are very few patches or fixes issued by the
Windows Mobile team on an annual basis.

BTW have you performed a detect & repair of Word and then reinstalled
ActiveSync?

My take on this is that the converter DLL's are desktop-side and part of the
core Windows system, so they should come under the normal Windows fix
schedule rather than the Mobile agenda. If my findings are correct, how do I
ensure that Microsoft are made aware that the problem exists?....Does someone
from Microsoft read these posts? Perhaps "IF I WHISPER LOUD ENOUGH AND LONG
ENOUGH".
The truth is I've written an application that needs the Windows search
function API to hunt for text strings in documents uploaded from the Pocket
PC, so the correct format is crucial. As it is, I have written a workaround
of my own, but this is bigger than just my app...it needs a proper fix for
the greater good of the Windows Mobile Community.

Hi,
With Windows Mobile 5.0 on the horizon, it no longer defaults to saving the
files in Pocket Word format. Also, ActiveSync 4.0 no longer includes the
converter DLLs for Pocket Word like ActiveSync 3.x does.

So if you've written a workaround, feel free to e-mail it to me and I can
host it and make it available to others. Maybe if enough people complain it
will get some attention however in the meantime at least there's a
workaround.

Hi all....Good News for everyone else....Bad News for me! I installed
ActiveSync 4.0 and, as Chris says, Microsoft have removed the Word Converter,
so we are restricted to PlainText, RTF (RichText) or PSW (Pocket Word)
formats. The Good News for everyone else is that MS Word (desktop) has a
built in Converter and can both Read and Write PSW files. This means the
Search functionality I needed works fine - in Word. The Bad News for me is
that my application won't read PSW files, so I'm still at first base in the
Search stakes. I can use RTF format for most things in my app, but I still
can't search on Text Strings as, as I said at the outset, the files sync'ed
from my Pocket PC are a mix of RTF and Hexadecimal. I now need to write my
own Converter so my app can Read/Write PSW files. Thanks Microsoft! And many
thanks to you Chris for your help. You obviously know your stuff.
