What the point of D&S?

Aloha all.
What's the point of the Documents & Settings shortcut in C:\? I cannot open
it. All I get is a msg saying it's unaccessable. Is there anything there, or
is it just there to look familiar?
Thanks!

That is a junction (short cut) for programs that were written to run under
versions of Windows prior to Vista. In Vista there is no "Documents and
Settings".
When the programs reference "Documents and Settings", the reference will be,
transparently to the program, redirected to the proper folder. Your
documents are under your account name in C:\users\Your Account
Name\Documents. You have no need to access "Documents and Settings".

It's there for backwards compatibility with legacy programs. It's not
really intended that you, the user, would actually ever see it directly.

NO. That junction belongs to Vista along with several others. It is used to
redirect references in previous versions of Windows to their proper Vista
locations. Why would you even think of playing with the OS like this when
you don't even know what it is you're playing with? You go dorking around
with your OS and you're asking for trouble big time. But I invite you do
delete everything you don't know or understand on your hard drive. You'll
then have lots of space! Your system may not work, but that's just a minor
consideration as long as you have the space.

When you see it onscreen, it is lighter than the other 'folders'.
That indicates it is not 'real' and shouldn't be mucked with.
I see it has been explained that it is for backward compatibility, so it is
best left alone.
