pop-ups driving me nuts

How do I stop Windows LIve Messenger pop-ups CONSTANTLY telling me that I
"must install the newer version in order to continue. Would you like to do
this now?" A dozen times an hour I have to stop whatever I'm working on to
click "No". Firstly, I'm not interested in having Windows LIve Messenger.
Secondly, I've got my pop-up blocker on maximum, and I've deleted anything I
could find that said Windows Live on it, and thirdly, I resent having this
product/service forced upon me 12 times an hour. Can anyone please tell me
how to stop this annoyance? Thx!

Just to quickly isolate why this is happening, open up the Task Manager by right-clicking on
the taskbar and choosing Task Manager (or pres Ctrl-Shift-Esc), and then click the Processes
tab.

Are you seeing msnmsgr.exe running or msmsgs.exe (or both)?
