Popup Blocker Acts unusually when popup blocker dialog is open

I am running Windows XP SP2, latest updates and the latest build of IE7 (as
of 2/6/06). I run Weatherbug pro as well, and today I did an upgrade check
and was elligible from 6.01 to 6.06. The upgrade notification is a web
button. When I click the web button, a web page pops up in a new window, but
was almost immediately automatically closed.

I turned off Norton Personal Firewall, and repeatedthe action with the same
results, indicating this was shut down by the browser.

I then proceeded to test the following actions:
-- Turned off the pop-up blocker, and clicked the "upgrade" button again.
Browser opens for a moment, then closes.
-- Turned on the pop-up blocker, and clicked the "upgrade" button again.
Browser opens for a moment, then closes.
-- I click on "Pop-up blocker settings..." which opens a dialog box. I go
back to the upgrade button while the dialog box is open and click it, hoping
to get the address in the moments it is open to add to the "allowed" lists in
the dialog box. The page opens successfully to:
http://img.design60.weatherbug.com/d...instructs.html and automatically launches a .exe file for download or run.

With the dialog box open, this seems to cause the pop-up blocker to be
disabled.

I have been unable to reproduce this effect at popuptest.com. I surmise that
the upgrade button for weatherbug pro is in its own controlled web page that
somehow gets around the popup blocker, or there is some other variable I am
not aware of.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can clarify any info.

I would sometimes have the same problem with norton. First make sure that
not only your firewall is down, but the whole Norton suite is turned off.
Turn pop-up blocker off, and any other protection utiliites you use. Some
also helpful info would be what kind of internet connection you have. I know
what I said sounds risky, but in the 10 seconds it takes for you to receive
that update, as long as that's the only window you have open, you should be
fine. Just turn everything back on as soon as the download starts (Norton
first) and run a quick scan.
